Last week I went on my first night ride ever at STT. I started a new job recently in Rancho Santa margarita, and another guy there rides regularly. He had an extra light that he let me borrow for the ride. It was a 15watt??? halogen light for the bars. I found it to be ok; I was also following him rather closely with two LED lights, one for the bars and one for the head. This seemed to be a good setup, so I did a little research and was qutite surprised to see how expensive the lights were.
Anyone want to recomend a good light for not a ton of cash? by the way, the Luge kicks ass at night. I took it quite slow, but it was still a damn good time. Thanks, Pat |

My advice is to save enough to buy an HID. It will give 4 hours of super bright light. I've seen some for around $300 which is a lot, but well worth it and down considerably from when they first came out. Here is an example from Pricepoint, the Nightrider Blowtorch for $299: Blowtorch

you might want to keep an eye on the jensons webpage, they have some really awesome deals on lights every once and a while...i guess sometimes people buy the light, go on a night ride and hate it, so they return the light and jensons will sell it to you for like 50% off

I really like my Light & Motion ARC (HID). That reminds me . . . I really should start night riding again. I think I got mine for about $300. You should ride with someone that has an HID to determine how much you want it. Also should consider how often you're going to be night riding. If you want to ride at night a couple times a week or more def. look into the HID investment.

Yeah I got mine when they first came out and got it new for around $369.... I friggin love it!!! 3 HID settings and one LED setting.
It does 4 hours on the brightest setting, 5 hours on the middle setting and 6 hours on the lowest setting!! And if you need more than 6 hours of light, you ride too slow!!!! |

You might take the Cateye Tripleshot a look. 3 LEDs. Doesn't put out as much as an HID. But it's white light and there's guys on mtbr.com who have been using it as a primary light. You can get 'em a bit cheaper than HIDs for about $200 on ebay. Though, I do remember seeing L&M ARc HIDs go for $270 when on sale.
BTW, I have a niterider Blowtorch for a couple years now. Works good, but side by side, I think the L&M Beam is brighter. |
