I just started this weekend...it hurt, like a lot...but I have not been riding on the regular lately, so Im sure there is a some work to be put in. Picture being on an Island with no help in sight....thats what it is...no gears to reach for. no grannies to help you. Lets just say it was 50% riding and 50% walking Saturday...Having said that it was great, I had so much fun, and will do my best to continue, only reason Id stop is if it messed up my knees too much.

On a cool note I did speak to a trail runner and some of his friends and he may join STR.

You get used to the pain. Pretty soon it becomes normal. I don't own a geared bike anymore

Thumbs up

I've been riding a 29er SS for about 2 years now. I switch off with my 26ers ... just so every bike get some "love". It's like having a quiver full of different arrows, each one a little different... keeps the biking interesting. At 66, I listen carefully to my knees... if they start hurting after a couple of longer SS epics, I ride the geared bikes for a while. If the hills are too long & steep, I walk... I feel at this point I don't have anything to prove to anybody ... this is suppose to be a fun sport... not a contest everytime you ride.... and unfortunately, it's easy to get sucked into this mentality.

sorry i'm overposting this thread, but...

i noticed today during my lunch ride that i don't think i could do this ss thing without being clicked in. i'm pulling hard coming back up in my spin when i stand up on the climbs.

and, i'm starting to understand why you want to spend the $$$ on hubs. the hub i have aft currently must have about 2 points of engagement. so if the hub gets ahead of me, i have about a quarter spin before i'm actually doing anything...

Im on Plats on my SS, I feel kinda the same as another member on this post, that pulling motion just doesn't feel right. I look at it like this, the worse swimmer you are the hard you work so the more you end up working out. Efficiency is for racers and programmers...oh wait never mind.

what you need is I hate foo button like the one on my avatar so you can keep pressing it when you're suffering. I do that quite a lot and I always feel better after i press it.

Just do it. I converted my old hardtail to a SS and I really enjoy it. I have not done anything really difficult, but I am working up to it. You will do better than you think. I though I would totally suck, but many of the climbs I have tried were easier on a SS as compared to my gearie.

shifting's for flip-floppers that can't make decisions.

The Kona A FS SS

Cockpit:
Thompson stem (15x100x31.8, think this ones gonna have to go for a lower rise)
Ringle bar(90g)
Yeti Grips(ODI)
Inverted incredi-bell(shift? ring?....ring...)
FSA extreme headset(Aplus)

Suspension:
Reba Team U-turn w/poplock(sick!)
Fox RP23(great on climbs at stiffest setting)

Seat and post:
Thompson Masterpiece/Titec(probably gonna go soon)

Brakes
Hope Mono mini's(needs adjusting)

Wheels:
Mavic Crossmax SL's(awesome wheels love em to death)

Cranks:
FSA(really smooth, Im pleased)

Pedals:
Azonic Magnesium

guess what thats pretty much it on an SS

RR: the bike is smooth and responsive, and the Reba is freaken awesome, but a bi@tch to pedal of course, Im running 20t as a beginner at SSing, but based on my performance on Saturday I will be on 20t pretty much for good. The bike is awesome the rider needs to catch up for sure. looking forward to the snickers of geared bikers passing me on Cholla(and those nice folks that cheer me on)
