I have done the same thing. I have found purses, wallets, and phones and have tracked down the owners to give it back to them....with everything that was in it when I found it. The reason is simple, 1. its the right thing to do & 2. I would want someone to do the same for me.

Believe it or not, there are good people in the world that do good deeds. It's all about karma. Keep the wallet and you create negatives vibes and disaster will strike at some point. Be a kind genuine honest human being and give it back and good things will certainly happen to you in 10 fold.
I returned a wallet I found in the middle of the street once about 15 years ago, cash and all. When the owner came to retrieve it, first thing he did was look inside and see if the cash was missing. When he realized it wasn't, he looked up at me with disbelief like that can't be. Of course it can. He tried giving me a reward and I couldn't take it. If it was some guy in a Bentley and the returned wallet had thousands of dollars in it then yes, I'd take it in a heart beat. This guy was a working stiff and he didn't look like he was in any position to be handing out rewards. I'm sure his wife and kids could've used that money much more then I.
If I had kept the wallet (which I never even considered), it would've ruined my conscience and kept me up for many nights. I hope anyone else would do the same but I do realize there are those who could care less if they took what's not theirs and still manage to sleep like a baby.

I was DH'ing in Mammoth last July. Same thing, my wallet was in an unzipperd pocket in my camelback. End of the day, went to check in the lodge; no wallet, no credit cards, no ID, and no cash for gas to get home (San Diego). Guy found it on the mountain, somehow, called the credit union and gave his cell number; the credit union called my house, left that number; my wife called my cell, left the number; I called the guy, he brought my wallet to me. I glanced to see the credit cards and my ID present, then gave the guy, and he took it, all my cash, about $250. Personally, I would not have taken it, but I was heppy then and remain happy now to have had my wallet returned.

during finals week last quarter, i just made a quick food run and my wallet had fallen out of my pocket while i was riding back home. i didnt even realized i had dropped it, but some one called me later in the day and returned it. what are the chances of that happening on a college campus, especially when i had several hundred in it?

Especially if that college was SDSU. They would've kept your money and used it to buy into the trafficing on campus. Money makes money!

Oh yeah! You just wait until some kid OD's on cocaine or heroin and they'll run a sting like they did in SD and things will surface. Goes on on every campus. Only reason SD was targeted was due to a drug related death and complaints from concerned parents to the authorities. You rock the boat enough and you too can have such results or outcomes.

Funny story about finding a wallet.
I find a wallet while riding dirtbikes in Gorman. It had about $150 in cash and belonged to a 17yo kid. I call up a phone# in the wallet and ask for the kids # after explaining the situation. When I call the kids house they won't let me talk to him and tell me they will send somebody over to get it. Sounds fishy to me so I tell them I won't give it to anyone but the kid. They tell me he can't leave the house or talk on the phone. So I tell them they can't have the wallet. They eventually put the kid on the phone and he identifies certain things in the wallet and says it's OK for someone else to pick it up. When the mom comes over to pick it up I ask what the story was. Turns out he broke into his college fund and bought $350 worth of stuff for his dirtbike and was grounded for doing it. One of the things I had him identify was a reciept for a pair of AXO boots. She offered me $20 and I told her to put it towards his college fund.

I had to rehash this one when I "lost" my bike.

We were heading up the dirt road to Holy Jim with four bikes in the back on a hitch rack. It was really early, maybe 6:15 am so it was still pretty dark on the way up and a really bumpy ride. I guess it's maybe a 4 mile drive up to the trailhead and when we finally arrive my Niner SIR9 had jumped out of the rack and was somewhere down the road.

So we quickly unloaded the rest of the bikes and gear and headed back down hoping to track it down. Fortunately we had more of our group still driving a few minutes behind us and they came across my bike. Someone driving back down had seen my bike laying in the middle of the road and actually picked it up and leaned it up against a tree. Talk about lucky and good karma.

Reunited at last

Today I was riding on the top of Oaks and left my pack near the table to go over to the drop area. When I came back, my pack was missing. After a phone call to it from a friends phone, a nice lady was meeting my dad that a nearby Tai-Kwon-Do place. Thank you for the good people left in this world.

Tai-Kwon-Do: is that right?

It's not about getting "paid back", it's the right thing to do. I love hearing these stories. I know there are a lot more good people in the world then the not so good ones and this helps to restore that faith in mankind.

It's interesting, I had a hypothetical discussion with some of the younger guys I work with about morals and integrity. The younger generation seems to be all about the money. Doing the right thing doesn't come into play anymore, sad really.

i guess it really depends on the environment in which they were raised. yeah, its sad that people are concerned with the right now, rather than what's right.
i think society is really struggling with this right now and more and more, i've noticed that it really depends on the parents and how they treat their children. if they treat them with love and respect, the children will reflect that on those they encounter, and if they are neglected and mistreated, they will reflect their anger and pain on society and will ultimately, lead to the downfall of society.

My daughter was on her way to LAX to go to Colorado this morning for the collegiate road nationals. She calls me from the airport parking lot and I can hear the concern in her voice.

"I think I left my wallet at Quiznos in Oxnard." Her flight leaves in a little over an hour. No way for her to go back for it and get back in time to catch her flight. Luckily, she has her passport in her backpack so she has ID to get on the flight.

I get on the net and find the number to the Quiznos in Oxnard, call and YES, they have her wallet.

So I drive to Oxnard, get the wallet and take it to Kinkos/Fedex and overnight it to her hotel. She'll have it by 10:30am tomorrow.

On 2 occasions, I had found an ATM asking whether I needed more time. I don't claim to be a boy scout, and the possibilities did cross my mind. But I always put myself in the other person's shoes and make the right choice.
