So, I have noticed that many of the STR/Trail Angel community have these engraved id tags that are on wristbands with emergency contacts on them and such. I went and looked these up online and it seems like $20 well spent.
Although, I got to thinking and almost everyone who I have seen with one had it wrapped around their bars, not on their person. Food for thought...your bike is the last concern of the first responders and usually is the first thing cast aside to create room for assistance. Plus, you are going to get split up from your bike if it's bad enough to not leave under your own power. You might really want to consider wearing them if you want to make sure it serves the purpose intended...and trust me the hope is they never get used for the purpose intended.

For under half of that you can get a set of dog tags made. Check out your local surplus store.

I wear one on my wrist when training solo. I make sure to turn it so it's up-side down for me and on the inside of my wrist: easier for a rescuer to spot it when starting an IV. Though I should wear it on my left, inside wrist to be most easily seen, but my Garmin goes there.

Someone told me to carry a USB key with all my information. I never got around to asking an EMT if they could download the informaiton from the key. If someone could confirm that this is possible, this would be a cheaper solution as you can get 128mb keys from Target for like $5

I have a color laminated copy of my CDL with the pertinent info on the back....
Like Penicillin allergy, wife's phone number and a backup phone number for folks she works with just in case. Made a few of them and they are in all my riding packs. If the EMT isn't smart enough to look there oh well...

Rescuers are specifically trained to check necks and wrists for medic alert tags and the like. If you have an ID card in your pocket or a wallet, they'll find it at the hospital, if it's in a hydration pack, it'll get taken off before you get strapped to the back board and in a saddle bag it'll get left with your bike. Emergency info needs to be on your body or in your pockets for me/them to find it.

I have the wrist one. It did save my azz when I took that bad spill 3 weeks ago. The EMTs took the data right on the spot. Apparently (the crappy) Mission Viejo Hospital I was at lost my Road ID so Edward and Mike mailed me a replacement free of charge! I would recommend it to anyone. Excellent service!
![]() Edit: Like everyone else said, make sure it's on your ankle or wrist. In an emergency, they will not look on your bike or bag. Last edited by northshore; 05-06-2008 at 03:04 PM. Reason: Edit: Added ankle and wrist comment |
