Although I still have those Avid 5s we were talking about, if you want to get Shimanos, the XTs perform way better than the XTRs (thanks to Shimano's Servo-Wave technology being used on the XTs but not the XTRs).

I vote for XT as well over either XTR or avid. In my experience, the avids have been finicky, and can be a bit time consuming to own. The XT's are easily set up, have more pad clearance, more power, better modulation etc etc etc. the list goes on.
And I'm not just blowing it out my arse, I have used both brakes and would buy the XTs if i had the choice. Either that or formula Oros, which are very simlilar to the XT in feel, albeit a tad bit more powerful |

I feel hopes are the best but they are pricey!! avid's on the other hand especially the juicy ultimates work awsome they have a one piece machined caliper body dual piston with pad contact adjust, which makes adjusting your brakes on the trail a snap just turn the contact nob in for more contact, very easy to bleed and user friendly, to bleed just buy the bleed kit and follow the directions, new for this year the ultimates come in a cool white. http://www.sram.com/en/avid/hydrauli...akes/index.php
