Default Chantry Area on Fire

There is a fire right now around the Chantry Flats area. Reports from MrWheelie are that the fire is lower down and not in the canyon proper. This may affect the Monrovia Peak ride tomorrow. Stay tuned...

It's not looking too good out there. MrWheelie reports fixed winged aircraft and helicopters dropping retardant for hours. The winds have died down so hopefully they can get the upper hand on things. The fire doesn't appear to be burning in Chantry or Big Santa Anita Canyon but more on the ridge heading up t Mt. Wilson.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, unless out of precaution, they close Santa Anita into Chantry. The fire is west of Santa Anita (very north-end of Camillo Street off of Grand View). It's under containment but you never know.

Joe, so you don't think we would have any problem descending from Newcombs to Chantry? I realize the fire is not there but access from Chantry down the road to Santa Anita would be a risk. If we can't get out that would be pretty crappy.

Per the media, the local PD & Fire Dept., it's contained but taking the safe route and avoiding the general area all together probably isn't a terrible idea. I was merely stating that it's no where near Chantry but yes, safe is best.

Better safe then sorry. If it's out I'd go for it, but if they say Containment by ....o'clock, I'd avoid it. You could always just do the pancake ride. We've got a pretty good size group going up the Merrills if your ride doesn't work out.

Call me if you're interested. We are getting a 6:30am start though.
