I'm thinking in replacing my rear tier as well. Looking for the new WTB WEIRWOLF 2.5 I've heard good things but never had a 2.5 so maybe too heavy? does anyone here have them yet? It supposed to be a new and better design. Please Help pips

Default Tires

At the moment I am running the single ply Maxxis Minion (DH)(2.35) front and rear specific on my 5-Spot. It is not the lightest setup, but in terms of weight/gripping ratio, is really good. I also like the Kenda Nevengal (2.35) sticky rubber version, but it does wear pretty quickly. If you want something more svelt, the Mutanoraptor is a good choice (2.24 and 2.4), decent traction, and light weight and fast rolling. For even lighter weight I am testing the Maxxis Advantage 2.1 on a Flux at the moment. Pretty good for a fairly skinny tire.

On my Heckler I am running a 2.35 KENDA BLUE GROOVE Stick-E up front with Stans and love it, on the rear I have a 2.35 WTB WEIRWOLF that I run backwards, it has been good, but I am going to get a 2.1 KENDA NEVEGAL for the rear very soon here, 2.1 may sound narrow, but it is actually quite wide. I'll go for the DTC version when I do buy the new rear tire.

Default Tires...tires....tires

It's looking like either Kenda or Maxxis. Performance (Supergo) didn't have much selection in-store. Any other shops in the area that carry these tires?

Definately the Nevegal in the back and Blue Groove in the front, the best combo I've tried (and I've tried a lot of tires). Check Jenson or Larry @ mtnhighcyclery for good prices. Like Dino said the 2.1 is pretty big compared to most. I'm running as small as a 1.95 on my Burner, on up to a 2.5 on my Pack......they are all great with tons of grip.

Ritchey Z-Maxx in 2.35 on my Enduro. I absolutely love 'em. I was always experimenting with tires until the mgr at my LBS recommended them. They are the best. Great grip--if you can turn the pedals they will hook up. They roll pretty good too.

Hey Pacman,
Isn't that an old school tread? if i remember correctly, that tread was very popular in the early 90's

is this it?

if so, they're $18 at REI in the 2.1 size

What a trip! I used those tires exclusively for five years, didn't know they still made 'em. I just found the 2.35's on Cambria's website. Is that where you picked them up?

That's the one. I love that tire. It grips great and rolls great--plus they aren't too expensive. They are pretty hard to find. I think my LBS carries them because almost the entire staff uses them. I run a 2.35 up front and a 2.1 in the rear. For $18, maybe I'll stock up. Thanks for the tip!!

Default Mission accomplished...

Thanks for everyone's help. I picked up some Kenda's (Blue Groove and Nevegal) from The Path. Rode Santiago Oaks yesterday, and Whiting/Luge/Whiting today. These things stick like mad on hardpack, great suggestion FXRob.

I'm kind of a tire weight weenie. I'm currently running the Spec Fast Trak Pro D2 2.00. After 13 years of riding hardtails, I'll be buying my first FS frame, a Flux, in the next couple weeks. How does the Nevegal 1.95 (Lite-DTC) / Blue Groove 2.00 (Lite-DTC) combo work? Does it come close to the 2.10 DTC tires? I primarily ride in the Santa Ana's. Thanks.

I ride 2.5 Blue Groove and 2.35 Nevegal on my Coiler. Great combo, the grip is amazing.

The only negative with the Nevegal is that the soft compound wears off quickly. But even with 50% of my thread gone, the tire still grips very well.

I will get another Nevegal
