okay i know its another tire thread but, i want to know what kind/brand/lug pattern of tire to get if i wanted the most traction i could possibly get for the socal terrain.
if you didnt care about rolling resistance, weight.... which tire? would it be a fat tire? tall lugs? or what? i was thinking a fat tire (2.4) to cushion my hardtail and maybe help keep my rear wheel on the ground. is that a good plan? right now i am on CST cabellero 2" wide tires.

He wants a large tire......The Velociraptor is anything but large. Kenda Nevegals are a good option. 2.35 that is a little bit bigger than that, especially depending on the rim. |

Im running a 2.35 Nevegal in the front and love it! Grips so much better in the looser stuff than other tires I have tried. Its not that much bigger than a UST 2.1 neve but probably a little much for strictly XC use.

It still depends on what surface you're going to ride. There is no tire that hooks up great in all conditions. What is your primary surface that you're going to be on?
I've rode a lot of tires and nothing is as good as the Specialized Chunder 2.5 that I've been riding. Once you try this tire you'll never consider another one....that is if you ride a lot on decomposed granite. But it does really well on about everything else. A little heavy, but has a super big footprint. It measures in at 2.65 but they claim it to be a 2.5, so if you don't care about weight and want a great tire, get the Chunder.

Take a look around at other places and you'll see. Nevegals are good, but they don't hold a candle to the Chunder. I've tried both. Number one front tire at Mammoth....Chunder 2.5. Also very well received at Whistler along with the Maxxis Minnions.

It will depend on what you are riding. Big lugged DH knobbies like the nevegals are great for most loose conditions but pale for So-Cal because the dirt here is simply very dry. I ride a 2.4 Mutano on the back which does not buzz and hooks up really well. On the front my choice is the 2.5 Weirwolf (not LT!!) which has lots of space between the directional knobs for traction and a great profile for hanging on when heeled over. I like these for the loose over hard pack typical dusty surfaces we encounter here locally, best of all there is little rolling resistance for the sheer amount of grip available.

most of my riding has been hard packed rock and dirt, mixed with sand and loose gravel and rocks.
rarely see mud i felt like i lost some traction yesterday at cheeseboro canyon and i just want to go ride other tires and see what a difference it makes.

Same configuration I was running, but went to a Chunder and a Weirwolf. Big Betty is also a very good tire and very light. 880 grams for a 2.5 tire is sweet.

I currently run Ritchey Z-Max 2.1's both front and rear and have found them to be the best overall SoCal tire I have ever ridden. Very aggressive tread.
Good luck... here's a link... http://ritcheylogic.com/web/Ritchey~...6044&live=true |

I run tubeless so my selection is a bit more limited, but I also like the Wierwolf up front and the Nevegal in back. For the winter though,I was running 2.2 Spez Roll-X,which I found was a good tire for me.Unfortunately they've been discontinued, and replaced with the 2.3 Eskar which I have a set of and will put on next week. These look to be a good "hook-up" tire that I've heard a lot of good things about.- Lloyd

this is very similar to the tire review thread...can a 'super mod' combine this with it please....lets try to consolidate tire threads and keep the 29er version and the 26er version.
btw, i love my 2.35 blue groove dtc up front with a 2.1 nevvie dtc in the back on my 5-Spot. ![]()

I don't get why a good 26 tire would not make a good 29 tire and vice versa. Seeing that the variations in tread pattern would outweigh any variations from the larger contact patch. Anyone find a tire that rocked in one diameter and sucked in another?
