A few minutes ago I logged on to STR and noticed 13 of the 18 threads that appeared on the STR "MEMBER" page were "introductory" in nature. Big Thanks to Red Hot Sloth for making that happen!

The words are always the same..
"...Hello.. I'm getting back into the sport... a group of riders I met at ____ told me about STR.... an STR member assisted me on the trail, looking forward to riding with everyone... looks like a fun group...."

The funny thing is MANY of them, we NEVER hear from again! How can anyone expect to benefit from this site- if they do not participate?

Literally EVERY Sunday (at The Fully Loop), we welcome 2, 3, 4 (as many as) 5 new riders- with open arms! Most leave grateful they attended the ride!

I can honestly say, 90% of the people who step-up (and join us) on Sunday Fully Rides- remain active members of STR... in one way or another! I can't say the numbers are as high for those who have NEVER attended a ride... never posted... never hit the THANKS button!

Why does the topic of participation strike a nerve in me? In a word: Friendship!!! The closest friends I have on STR aren't household names.... they don't post 24/7.... they don't post rides... they simply enjoy riding bikes- WITH FRIENDS! We have a blast every time we get together! Not sure how I could go back to riding alone!

A totally unexpected result of my participation in STR is how much I have in common with my fellow FAMILY MEMBERS! Whether it be desert trucks, motorcycles, fast cars, fast women, beer, scuba diving, hiking, fishing, skiing, golf, indoor rock climbing, kayaking etc., the bonds I have made will last a LIFETIME!

What I am trying to say is: Participate. You will be glad that you did!

TIRADE ALERT:
As of 10:40pm, EVERY THANKS I have received and EVERY POST has been from someone I know! Not exactly what I had in mind.

Even better is the fact: of the 149 members who are currently online- I have NO clue who 64 of them are. Not (1) bothered to hit the THANKS button! Not (1) bothered to post. Not (1) offered to join a ride.

I can see my time was well spent!!!

It can be a bit intimidating to post on a regular basis, when I first joined I was very hesitant to post. Now that I have met some really awesome friends, like you Dino (even though I post rides i hope the feeling is mutual), I participate in the Sunday ride and I love meeting the new riders. I think once people come on the Sunday ride, or any ride for that matter, they realize how friendly everyone is and start posting.

I think this is the "nicest" forum I frequent. What I mean by that is I almost never see a thread get ugly. No harsh words are exchanged between posters. Even political threads are amazingly respectful even when people totally disagree on something has highly charged as politics. Everyone I have meet from STR are the coolest people. It is a real pleasure to post here because everyone is so friendly. For the most part we kind of all know each other through mutual connections. There are many of you who I have never met but feel as if I have and hope to one day.

So for those that may feel intimidated, I say don't worry about it. You are not going to get yelled at or made to feel stupid here. If you do ask what you think is a stupid question just preface your question with the fact that you are new to the sport and need advice. Many here love to give advice and are willing to show others new trails and ways of doing things.

dude, i love this place, i have learned sooooo much from my short time on this forum and have met some great people who are more then willing to help another person.

so i agree, participate there is soo much benefit from the site.

Brian is right.... there is something about proximity where we'll all likely cross paths on a trail one day that keeps the flaming behind a veil of internet pseudo-anonymity to a minimum... it's a refreshing change.

Plus STR has this smilie....

what more could one want?

yea, i am sorry i am not able to join lately... i personally loved riding with you guys. i think someone said it in the other night ride, but... it is just nice to have an easy ride and may be chat with friends...

ups says my new headlight will be in friday, and going to test out my new wheels set tomorrow maybe before class? i hope to may be hit the trails soon next week regularly... see you guys out there!

for those that think they will get left behind... i was a beginner to even in terms of stamina, and i had so much fun at the beginner group. also wanted to mention, if you are missing something, there is always someone there to help you out with anything... water, tools, tips...

yea, such a nice, supportive, and educational site... look at me.... my first mountain bike was built by me!

I learned a long time ago that that there is a likely a forum for ANYTHING you're interested in. Be it E36 BMWs, or Apple hardware, or high-end photography, there's a forum for you. And forums are the BEST places to learn what's good, what's just okay, and what you should avoid like the plague.

I joined STR right before I purchased my first (and only) mtn bike. And I just realized that this is my 1 year anniversary on here!

Next month will be 1 year with my bike. It's been an amazing year that has seen me get into the best shape of my life (even compared to when I played football in HS), losing nearly 20 lbs of weight (226 down to 208 so far), gaining the ability to ride trails that I never thought possible before, and of course meeting and becoming friends with all the GREAT people on this site!!

If you are new or have lurked for a long time and never come out for a ride, you need to come out for a ride. The Sunday morning Fully Loop ride is great, as are any of the "official" newbie rides that happen from time to time. Come out and ride with us, I guarantee you won't regret it!

i post and i ride i almost dont know anyone on this forum i mostly ride alone and thats due to my fat a$$ being out of shape so i dont want to slow anyone down one day i would like to comedown to some rides and finally meet the STR family in real life
