Is this thing on?

Default Here's a topic: 29 frame on a budget..

So I'm getting some tax money and want to build up a geared hard tail. Two things are important. One, I'm getting something like $1200 back so lets stick to that. Two, I want light, under 5lbs on the frame. Ive seen some at 4.5 that look tempting.

So yeah, lets work on this together.

Side notes: Yeah, we're close to the 09 models coming out so if I have to wait for a super deal I will. Yeah, I can get a Gary Fisher with the sweet fox shock for $1500.

Niner EMD is 3 lbs something, and only 450 new... That is a good starting point as far as I am concerned.

On a budget = Redline Monocog

Then bling it out with the extra money you have left.... New wheelset, etc.

did you want to spend all of the 1200 on the frame, or was that for the complete bike?

Brewmaster had a debacle with shipping but he scored a killed deal on a complete bike

do you want to build it up piece by piece? or are you willing to buy it built and then slowly upgrade the parts? at a 1200 price point your best bet would be to buy an equipped bike and then upgrade as you see fit.

I'm sure if you went to the Path with $1200, Tani could find a 29er hardtail with gears for you with no difficulty.
If the frame weighed 5.0 lbs or 5.5 lbs I doubt you would be able to tell the difference on the mountain.

You can always save more money for the next sale or the newer component. If you currently have a bike you like to ride than that maybe is a good choice. If not, a good fitting bike, in time to enjoy for summer, is worth $150 and 4 months of waiting.

Default Broken Record

Put the $$ in the wheels first. Don't worry about .5lbs on the frame.

$500 wheels
$300 frame

not

$300 wheels
$500 frame

Thanks, that is sweet! I'm going to look into that for sure! I thought those were like $700 for the frame.

The complete bike. Ideally I'd want a fox fork, juicy hydro brakes, decent shifters and bottom bracket, etc.

Well, there are a few good deals but it seems like if I got a good frame and wheel set I could get used stuff and build a killer bike for less money. I mean, I could get that motobecane thing but then I'm going to want to get better parts asap. So I figured why not get a good frame and wheel set and start from there. If I'm going to spend the money I guess I should just spend it on the right parts once.

Thanks, but I can't take that bent tube style. I would feel like it was about to break. I'm weird like that.
