Default Looking for a Bike

Hey guys,
I am looking for a solid bike that can withstand a lot and will last me a while. I bought a Iron Horse Desparato from Sport Chalet and broke it within less than 4 weeks, they couldn't repair it right so I just returned it. My budget would probably be $900 and maybe $1000 maybe. I have been looking at the Trek Fuse and the Gary Fisher Cake 3. The bikes look pretty solid to me and have gotten pretty good reviews. Is there any other brands that you guys could recommend?

Thanks a lot,
Jason

Jenson is having close outs on Fishers and they have some Cake 3s for realy cheap. Go throught the link on the site and sctrs gets 10% of the money.

Not quite 10% but it is enough to help out with site expenses (such as the cost of the forum and gallery software).

Just about any bike you get from an LBS or a good retailer like Jenson will be tough enough not to break unless you get a xc bike and do lots of drops on it. Parts on cheaper bikes break more often (in theory) . Traditionally the more money you spend - the better performing and lighter the bike will be.

site note to others: Jax in Long Beach has an '05 Specialized Enduro with the fox 36 for $1900ish. Offer them something and they might just sell for lower.

What broke on the last bike ? How did you do it ? Where did it happen ? What trails/jumps do you ride ? Where do you want to progress to (goals) ?

This will help me make a good suggestion .

don't get a full suspension fisher... i had a suger 2+, actually went through 2 frames, due to constant chain suck. and their customer service is terrible.

i'd recommend you go on mtbr and check out the different bike manufacturer forums.

I'm a big fan of Specialized. The Rockhopper is in the price range. The Stumpjumper is a great bike but it's about $1200. You're not trying to get FS, right? You also might consider used. Craigslist and Ebay might yield interesting results.

Be careful. I started out saying I wanted to spend $1000. Then, next thing I know, I'm thowing down twice that on a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR. 'Course, I'm much happier with my bike than I would have been.

Check your User CP (control panel) up top there. I had to set mine to Pacific time. I guess the forum doesn't defaut. There's a few things that I had to set that didn't carry over. Not complaining, though. I'm just saying.

Jenson is not allowed to sell Fisher on-line. You would have to go to the IE to visit thier store.

Jason:

I enjoyed our aliso ride a few weeks back. Sorry to hear about your old bike, but I think you'll enjoy picking out a new one (I know I would!)

Bottom line:
Do your research so you know a good deal when you see it.
Ride lots of different bikes to get a feel for them.
And it never hurts to post your dilemma on this site...as they say, a**holes and opinions, everyone's got'em! All kidding aside, this site is a good place to bounce ideas around as some of the people really know their stuff.

Good luck on your new bike decision.

I would definitely consider used in that price range. You should be able to get something sweet that is not too old. Find a buddy who can help you pick and check them out or post prospects on this site. Most important is getting the right frame size and a bike compatible with the type of riding you plan. Depending on your age and knee joints you may or may not need full suspension. I had a hard tail for a year when I started and decided FS was for me. Too much standing on hardtails. But I had knee problems when I was younger. I bought one of my bikes used 7 years ago and it is still going strong- a Canondale V2000 Freeride.

Yeah, that was a fun ride. As far as the stuff breaking, the pedals kept breaking and the gear system was pretty crappy. I did my research, looked around at some stuff in my price range. I ended up buying a 2005 Trek Fuel 70. http://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2005/...jsp#largerview

It rides really good. I got it for $849 (Talked them into lowering the price). It MSRPs at $1099 so that isn't a bad deal.

I think I made a pretty good decision on this.

Thanks for everyones input,
Jason

Nice work! I'll bet it is like night and day compared to your previous rig!

We'll have to hit the trails again soon!

Yeah man, so far I have had a blast on it. We found some pretty sweet land to make a sweet cyclocross style trail on and I tried it out on it and its amazing. Its right by my house and its about probably a quarter mile give or take. We are going to finish the trail up tomorrow probably, I'll post pictures.
