I was thinking of getting a Spesh Deviant and was curious why riders on the more aggressive trails don't wear full face helmets. Trails like Rock it,Chutes and Goat look like prime face plant areas yet I see no one riding with a full face. Hey, I'm still a newbie so I don't want people pointing and laughing ![]() |

If you've ever climbed in a full face helmet you would understand. The Spesh helmets have a lot of vents but your head would still melt unless you're shuttling.

Full face helmets are hotter and some can make it more difficult to breath. Having said that, though, I don't think anyone who was wearing a full face helmet and has crashed and landed face first has ever regretted wearing the full face helmet. On the contrary, there have been many riders in many cases who have regretted not wearing a full face helmet.
Know the ride you're doing, and chose wisely. It's your call.

I wish I had a full face helmet on this last Sunday. If you have seen my face this week, you know why.

I have a spesh deviant, but cracked it and took off a small chunk of the chin. it's a good helmet and you can breath pretty easily because the chin area sticks out pretty far compared to the helmet im using now. it also vents well too for a full face helmet(i rode with it on xc/am rides for a while sense it was my only helmet).
I decided to ride with a full face because i kept landing on my head/face also, and it was worth it. it gives you a confidence boost also(for me atleast)

+1!
You can always strap it to your water pack. They are making lighter and cooler full face helmet now and days.

I full face on the days where I feel like im gonna need it, I had my broken HJC save me on a 12ft to faceplant in fontucky one day. Chutes, depends? Fast paced lets slam all the rocks, yeah ill wear it, slower kicked back and ill wear the brain bucket, I have landed on my face with a full face, brain bucket, and nothing. I think the full face felt the best.

My pack is designed to carry a helmet, I have been thinking it might make sense on hot day with climbing and some downhill to wear one and strap the other to the pack, wear the regular going up, and switch for the downhill.

This young lady and her sister both wore them for road racing. I asked my daughter about it and she said one of them had crashed pretty good and the other wears hers both for safety and as a sign of support. From what I hear, nobody gives them anything but props for getting back into the game.

I'd only wear FF if I also had a moto brace to prevent extreme neck movement. (The chin/face guard provides extra leverage to snap your neck.)
I keep thinking of Tara Llanes, still a pretty face but a quadriplegic. |

Where what ever helmet you feel comfortable wearing. Just keep in mind as others have said, the ff is going to be hotter and when the temps get up there, as they will today, your head is going to bake.
The thing about Tara's injuries, the vertebrae that were smashed were C7 and L1. Yeah the C7 would be affected by neck trauma but L1 is near the middle of the back which would require a huge impact other then at the neck/head area.
