..and some multi-tools for less than 50 bucks.

and a tire lever for around 6 or 7!!!!

see crank brothers is easier to get into than you think!

They had quite a few of these at Garage Works in Irvine. They are not selling them there but they are doing some of the building of the wheels. They sure look nice. You could stop by and take a look at them in person.

I know! and I love them. I got oem spds at the path for $10. I did have to get cleats, so $30 total. Just saying. I know you can't get a Lotus for the price of a Ford, but still.

Default Bling Wheelset...

Just wanted to know if anyone had ideas/opinions on the Crank Bros. COBOL wheelset.

Think they are fast? Strong? What would happen if you broke a spoke? How easy would it be to "replace" a spoke? Truing the wheels?

Specs: 1540g, Tubeless Compatible, 1.9-2.3" tires, disc only, 6061 -t6 aluminum, 19mm internal width

"...Spokes connect at a verticle rib.. no spoke holes through the rim wall or rim bed."
Supposed to result in a stiffer and stronger wheel!

"...Elongated alloy nipples and short stainless steel spokes simplify truing and optimize wheel stiffness and quality."
Any possible negatives to this design?

"... new split qr lever design offers simple, two stage closure and release."
Any reason this design is superior to (let's say) a Hope Quick release?

I'm interested in that split QR: different sized cams, I'm guessing?

Either way, Crank Bros makes some damn-good looking components.

The "REASON" I find these wheels sooo intriguing is for the simple reason- CRANK BROS. put their name on them.
When they put a stamp of approval on something, style and quality will be included free of charge!

Looking for feedback from an STR member who owns them.

I see a few issues that can "possibly" arise.

First is that with the elongated nipples now you have to worry about the spoke binding during a wheel build/spoke replacement, but the spoke as well. Placing the joint in the center may subject it to more bending forces than at the edges. How much repeated flexing can the thin sidewalls of the nipple take?

Second, although the spoke attach to tabs that will probably resist spoke pull through better than a hole drilled through the rim wall, how long will the tabs last where it meets the rim? I'm guessing that it would have to withstand not only tension from the spokes, but perpendicular bending forces when the wheel is side loaded. Everyone knows what happens to metal that is bent back and forth repeatedly.

Third, how easy/difficult would it be to get replacement spokes and nipples for the wheel?

I like the idea of the split lever design though. It could possibly provide a higher clamping force if designed correctly. In the very least, it would make it easier to apply sufficient clamping force using skewers. I think Hope skewers look nice, but the cam action is not very smooth. My favorite by far are the Shimano internal cam skewers.

Please keep in mind that I am not an engineer by any stretch of the imagination nor do I have any background in it. I'm sure Crank Brothers took all of this into consideration already.

All that being said. If this wheelset is for you Dino, you should be fine. I've seen you ride. My little niece said you can borrow the wheels off of her tricycle if you ever decide to ride with the big boys.

My guess is you would send the wheel to them for replacement. They're prolly betting on that not happening often, cause, if one does break, there's no way you can keep rollin' unless you bring a spare wheel with you on the trail...
