Default Dean Potter Free Climbing El Cap

My wife and I saw a killer intense video of this guy last week at the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour at CalTech. This guy is so crazy. Enjoy Correction, he isn't free climbing this but is solo.

I brokeout in a cold sweat watching that and not because he's in incredible shape...

Default Yup...

I've climbed with Dean/Steph a few times.....the videos of him only convey soo much. The energy that he exudes is practically visible.

All the being said.....his exploits in Yosemite pale in comparison to the stuff that he's pulled off in South America. Do a google search on that and see what comes up.....mind boggling.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole Delicate Arch/Patagonia/Potter/solo or not debacle.....but I definitely support Patagonia's decision to drop an athlete that wasn't living up to the high standard they expect in regards to environmental stewardship.

Sweet. Watching makes my palms sweaty. I'm gonna have to start keeping the chalk bag here by the keyboard. Notice he's free soloing much of the route--no protection at all.

Here's a montage of arguably the most gonzo free soloer of our lifetimes:

Watch closely and you'll see a little mountain bike action near the end.

What did he do, place bolts on Delicate Arch? I wouldn't suspect there would be much opportunity to climb it clean.

It never seizes to amaze me that these guys eventually fall and die, but why it took so long for it to happen.

Shouldn't you be taking a nap? Wasn't yesterdays ride enough for you?

I'm not into rock climbing and don't know the first thing about it. But one doesn't have to be involved in a sport to recognize and appreciate extraordinary skill and talent.

You gotta give it to him--that is amazing!!

I can't quite recall what the solo record is.......I know the record for a duo is well under 3 hours at this point......2:30 or soo if I remember correctly?

Bear in mind that El Cap(particularily The Nose) takes your average pair of climbers several days.....sometimes 4-5.

What will be truly impressive is when one of these freaks free-solos The Nose. I can't imagine it's more than 4 years away at this point.

As an old friend of mine from back in Tejas used to say... "Weyllll......thassss jusch schtooopid!!"

That was freakin' amazing. Problem is we'll read about him someday in the paper after he misses a hold or one breaks out on him. But at that point you gotta argue whether he is living his life at such a pace that even if he dies young, he might well have lived "longer" than the rest of us, just at a different speed...

Pain ...I highly respect you as a rider, but about climbing? You don’t know dick.

These guys are the top of the food chain. Amongst the great North American free soloists (Henry Barber, John Bacher, Peter Croft, Charlie Fowler, Dano..), only Derek Hersey fell while soloing. And having met most those guys and seen Bacher in action regularly, your comment is demeaning to their amazing talent and commitment to their craft. I'll chalk it up to ignorance, not ill-will.
