Default Romic shock and options...

I've been noticing my Romic shock has been easily bottoming-out lately and for those who know my riding style and ability should know that shouldn't be the case. Meaning, I'm no hucker!
So when I had my bike @ the path yesterday getting my new 08 XT discs installed, I asked them to look at the shock and adjust it accordingly. After taking one look at it, the tech determined that it needs to be sent to Romic for (another) rebuild as he suspects air mixed in with the oil. No visible leaks.

I know Romic is not what it used to be and I've had my share of problems with it (3rd or 4th blowout). I called Romic and spoke to Debbie today. She said they can rebuild it like new and replace all internals for $34.95 plus S&H with a 7-10 day turn-around. That sounds like a killer deal, minus the part about being without my primary ride for 2 weeks.

Got me thinking, what options do I have for a 5.75" rear end shock? I know air shocks have come a long ways. Thoughts and inputs?

I had a Romic worked fine, but didn't seem to be all that. Here's a good deal on a DHX 4 Coil, but they only have 1 size.
What size is your Romic eye to eye & stoke. There are some sweet options in the coil department right now.

Joe I have a backup Romic shock off my 2003 5-spot with a 500 lb spring. I have not used it in a long time. The last to use it was Mr. Freak about a year ago. You are more than welcome to borrow it while yours is down. I am riding a reverse Strawberry Peak Loop tomorrow, parking at lower Colby Canyon Trailhead at 9am. Call me at 714-747-2189 and maybe we can met.

Dean

Hey Joe,

What eye-to-eye length and stroke do you need? I too have the Romic off my Joker (7.5 i2i, 2-inch stroke), and I will be up in your neck of the woods tomorrow to ride Chilao. Let me know.

Edit: Whoops. I see now that Dean is gonna be up that way too and hooking you up.

Thanks, Toby. I'm not too certain but I think the stroke and i2i is different then the Romic on my Id. Bike's @ The Path right now (picking up tomorrow or Sunday) getting new brakes installed, free hub re-built, rear derailer cable, might need a new bottom bracket. I can't believe I did all that with the bike hanging from the rafters. Long-winded point being, I couldn't tell you the i2i info right now. I think Dean's should be more close to my fit so I'll go with that for now. If wrong, I'll call you.

Have fun in Chilao tomorrow. That's a cool fun ride!

You can also go to Fontana this weekend and to the owner of Romic, Roger Hurd and bend his ear. He knows suspension like the back of his hand being that he has done it for all of about 20 years. Tell him Dale Aastrom said hello

Joe, Deans shock is the same size as ODB's. When you send your romic in ask about the big boy valving, or having a heavier weight oil put in it. The stock valving doesn't have enough compression dampening IMO.
