Default Watch out for those snakes!!!!

Just wanted to send out another warning about the rattlers out there right now. My dog was just bitten this afternoon and is now in the urgent care on an antivenom drip. He was on a walk with my neighbor, off leash on a service road for the Talega golf course. No rattle, no warning. My neighbor didn't even know he what had happened. She thought he may have spraigned his ankle. I got a phone call, hooked up my Burley trailer to my bike and went and got him. Luckly he is a big dog-85lb Chocolate Lab, so the Vet said his chances are good.

Keep your eyes peeled out there and keep your dogs on leash. And please keep your thoughts positive for my Maxwell...

Thanks to all for your kind words and positive thoughts!

Just heard from the vet that the first dose of antivenom seems to be working well. His blood coagulation looks good and his platlets are not droping any more. So far so good. We will know more in the moring

Thanks,
Chad

We used to own an orange grove and we had lots of snakes, mostly rattlers. We also had a couple dogs as did our caretaker who lived on the property. All of our dogs were bitten at least once and one particular boxer used to get bit once or twice a year, but would continue to hunt and attack rattlesnakes. The dogs would typically get stiff jointed for a few days after being bit, but nothing more then that. The boxer who was owned by the caretaker was very adept at killing the snakes, but occassionally would get bit, but he acted like it was no big deal. He took little interest in snakes that didn't rattle, but would attack them if they were easy to get.

He lived till some kids from Riverside came out next to our grove and were shooting squirrels and one of them thought it would be fun to shoot a dog.

I had heard from a zoo caretaker that there is some controversy about whether the anti-venom treatment is even necessary.

My girlfriend spent $3,000 on anti-venom treatment when her horse was bitten in Weir Canyon.

Thanks pain freak, it's always good to haer about the positive outcomes!

Terrible to hear about someone shooting your dog, some people need to be beaten.

I picked Maxwell up this morning from the Urgent Care and he is doing much better! He is walking on his own and the sewlling did not spread overnight, which is a very good sign. He is being monitored at out local animal hospital and we expect to bring him home tonight.

Once again I appreciate your kind words and positive thoughts It's always nice to hear the stories and experiences that ended in positive outcomes...this is why this community is just that, a community not just a mtb hangout!
