Glad to hear things are getting better. I didn't sleep while our dog was in urgent care with stomach trouble a few months back.

Seems like every one around here named Maxwell is good at recovering from injury.

Especially since they make anti venin using HORSE SERUM anyway. Seems unnecessary.

Glad to hear the pooch is doing well.

Default Rattlesnake Vaccine for Dogs

This company has developed a vaccine for dogs against rattlesnake bites. Their web site says it doesn't totally prevent the affects of the venom but it gives you more time to get your dog to the vet in case it is bit.

Glad to hear your dog has recovered!

She thought he may have spraigned his ankle. I got a phone call, hooked up my Burley trailer to my bike and went and got him. Luckly he is a big dog-85lb Chocolate Lab, so the Vet said his chances are good.

Keep your eyes peeled out there and keep your dogs on leash. And please keep your thoughts positive for my Maxwell...

Glad to hear your dog's doing ok.I have a 70# Black Lab.Since spring has started and the snakes are coming out,I've been keeping her on the leash instead of running free like she usualy does. She has not been too happy about that.I also went riding on Mon.morning and Wed.morning and counted 8 snakes,3 of them rattlers.- Lloyd

I was at a park yesterday evening with my kid and met a lady with a 4 year old boy also playing at the park. She told me that her son was bitten by a rattler last week in a park at Quail Hill in Irvine. They were able to get the little guy to Irvine Regional Hospital within 15 minutes of the bite. They gave him anti-venom and some kind of serum medication. He's doing fine and running around like nothing happened but the mom says his arm is still really weak and he's been hesitant to use it.
You should have seen the bite though. The boy was bitten on the wrist and the marks ware barely noticeable but his arm is black & blue all the way to his collarbone.

I saw a LOT of tracks in O'Neil this morning. The snakes are definitely out there in numbers this year.

The dogs would typically get stiff jointed for a few days after being bit, but nothing more then that. The boxer who was owned by the caretaker was very adept at killing the snakes, but occassionally would get bit, but he acted like it was no big deal. He took little interest in snakes that didn't rattle, but would attack them if they were easy to get.

He lived till some kids from Riverside came out next to our grove and were shooting squirrels and one of them thought it would be fun to shoot a dog.
So the dogs never even needed treatment? I'm always concerned when hiking/trail running with my lab. My thinking is as soon as he gets bit, it's off to the vet. Maybe not?

Talking Grasshoppers....

It's know that rattlers will strike at anything in grey, dark blue and black colors ... somewhat similar to an STR jersey... and white lettering really seems to excite them as well....

Be careful out there!

Default Any tips?

Having missed our last "bad" snake season a few years back, my snake avoidance skills are a bit rusty. My greatest fear, is getting striked at while riding alone, in some lush singletrack. I will allways scout out a place to stop in I need to, and will really look closesly before I put a foot down. I have heard of people being bit before a rattle was even heard. And reading some of the other posts, I really don't think there is a magic time to avoid them alltogether. Any tips?

For you consideration.... educate your dog on the hazards of snakes.... Check in to having your dog schooled by Snake Break clinics offered by Quail Unlimited or Rahauges out there in Norco... they usually offer the clinics for a nominal fee in the fall, before bird dog /hunting season.

This course offers a negative connotation and avoidance of all snakes by your dog through live interaction with rattlesnakes with jaws taped shut. Your dog receives a good shock through a collar the moment it first spots and smells the snake. From there on out, your dog will avoid snakes at almost all cost, to avoid getting zapped, and in the process, avoid getting bitten also.

Very, very effective training for your dog.

There is no magic time, there is a magic temperature.... your odds decrease exponentially the further away from 80F the ambient air temperature is.

Ride when it's 70F out or less, or 90F out or more.

Default Happy to be Home!

Maxwell is finally home after two nights in the Urgent Care. He is very happy to be home but is pretty tired...

His whole leg is still very swollen and bruised, but he is on his way to a full recovery!

Shannon: There are rattlesnake vaccines on the market and it's a good idea for any dog that is "at risk" (meaning you walk them on trails in so cal/az/texas off leash, or even on leash on narrow trails) to get the vaccine. It does not mean that they would not need the same tratment that we had to go through, but it does give your pet more time to get the treatment before thier body starts to shut down. Small dogs need this even more because the hemotoxins get distubuted much faster throughout thier bodies.

1080P: The snake training is also a very good idea. Maxwell's "best friend" is a German Shorthair and has gone though this training several times. The only problem with this is many rattle snakes are not rattling any more. The one that bit my dog never rattled once. This may be because my dog just stepped on it in the bushes, but I have also read/heard that their is a phenomenon going on where some snakes have a genetic mutation where it is no longer their instinct to rattle. The ones that do not rattle, do not get killed by humans or other prey. The ones that do rattle get killed off. Through natural selection the number of rattlers that do not have the instinct to rattle is growing fast. Do not ask me to site my source because I cannot remember where I heard/read this but I know that I am not making this up.

I stil think the rattlesnake training is still a very good idea. It will at the very least keep a curious dog from being biten on the nose.

Take care everyone and safe riding

It's unlikely a dog will see or hear a rattlesnake first... they don't see or hear quail first either. It's the sense of smell that prevails.

A dogs nose, knows... As the treasurer for Quail Unlimited for 4 years straight, I saw 60 to 80 dogs a year trained and run through Snake Brake. Labs, draughtweirs, German Shorthairs, Viszla's... etc.

They all got an education, they all went hunting, and I'm not aware of a single dog being bit. When you see how much snake country a pointer covers while hunting quail, without getting bit, while hunting with their nose... statistically, the probability of all the snakes they've smelled and went around and avoided is huge.

On the note of the rattlers, I saw a few up at box springs last week, not just tracks, there out there, so get your snake bite kits and put them in your backpacks/seatpacks.

Here's 1 I saw at Santiago Oaks when I went out there to met up with the trail work crew. This guy was coiled up and ready to strike in typical rattler strike pose, but I couldn't get my camera out in time. It was a beautiful snake about 3 1/2 feet long.

Default Snakes Galore

Yeah, on Sunday somewhere out east of El Cajon there were a lot of rattlers on and just off the trail. Real creepy feeling to stop and have rattles in surround sound.

Be careful out there, stay on the bike or watch where you step off!
