I thought about getting one at the beginning of the year, but figured that I don't like the clutter and don't need all the info. I just like to ride. But when I WAS looking, I would have bought the Garmin Foretrex 101 or maybe the 201. It's fairly inexpensive as GPS units go and it's small and light. You can get a bike mount for under $20 too, so it'd be under $200 total.

I have a Garmin Legend that I bought 2-3 years ago. I used to use it allot to find trailheads and explore remote areas. To me a GPS would be useless if it did not interface with my computer to download maps, waypoints and save routes.
GPS screens are small and hard to read in direct light so I never bought a handlebar mount. I put it in the top of my camelback with the patch antenna facing up. I have spent more money on the Topo mapping software than I spent on the GPS unit. |

I don't know a ton about this unit, but here's a link to one I would consider if I was buying one. It includes a heart monitor, which is something I use a lot.
Garmin Forerunner 301

I have this unit http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60cs/
It is a pretty good unit. I have used it in my pack for most of the trips. I can download the information to overlay on google earth so I can see the trails I have ridden. I can have proximity alarms to trail heads so it will beep when I am with a certain radius. Overall its a pretty good unit. I have the handle bar mount, but I have been over the bars so much I don't want to leave it out there. I made this from a recent trip to Santiago Oaks |

Have you GPS guys tried this program?
http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/ I don't have a GPS myself but that software seems pretty helpful. Free too.

I had it mounted on the stem for the last 4 years, to replace bike computer and it survived several crashes (in one of which I broke my left shoulder
). Seems pretty safe there. With around $250 you can by a Garmin Vista C, very compact, light and small, nice color display. It also has real compass and altimeter. The Edge 305 looks definitely cool, but more for road training than MTB. I like to have detailed map loaded in the GPS, so in the end it replaces bike computer and maps ![]() Display isn't too small and if you have the right screen on , you can easily read bike computer functions (speed, time, altitude etc...) I need to upgrade mine, so I'm waiting to see the Edge 305 before I decide, but I most likely go with Vista C. |
