Default Its not about welding the brake tab!!

So a few weeks ago Boats PMs me to see if I can weld a Ti brake tab on the rear of his Merlin. I normally don't do this kind of stuff because there is no money in it but I take care of my STR peeps! I told him no problem.

Two weeks later the tab shows up from paragon and he is ready to get rid of the heavy set up that he is using on the rear of his bike. We set up a time and its on! While waiting for the tab to show up we PMed back and forth a few times. I found out that Boats can weld So I told him that we can go over some stuff when we are done with the bike.

So he shows up with his Merlin and we get into it setting up the position of the tab(did not fit that good) all the while shooting the shite. Turns out that Boats and I have a lot in common. We talk about work, play, bikes, life, Bla Bla Bla. Was a good time. After the bike was done we played with the welding machine for a while. Running beads on Steel and Aluminum and going over technique. He rocked it.

So this post was not about the brake tab but meeting a new friend! Nice to meet you Boats and thanks for trusting me with your pride and joy!! Looking forward to riding with you(Root Beer)

HUGH

I wrap with foil to keep the area saturated with Argon(shielding gas).
The welds are OK. The brake tab that Boats got was not even close to being a propper fit. Both the areas to be welded went from 1/8in gap to none. The end result is sweet and 110% . I would have went over the welds to clean them up but in my opinion it was not worth the extra heat on the frame.

nice work, Hugh! so, when you starting to make frames? i might be in the market for a Ti 29er SS towards the end of the year.

Duan: ti must be welded in an oxygen free environment or if the weld gets "contaminated" it'll oxidize from the inside. (i get that right, hugh?)

I had a pic of one of the welders at seven (i think) putting together a frame- literally every open tube had a argon gas tube going into it. I'll have to dig that up...

Exactly! Reads like a commercial for eHarmony

Just kidding. Actually, I've met seriously cool folks on here as well. BJammin did an awesome job on a wheel for me and went above and beyond to get back to me in a hurry. It's a great little thing we got going here on STR!

Default Brake Tab?

HUGH- I hate to go off tangent on the cool bonding experience, but I have an old school GT Lightning Ti I would love to put disc brakes on, is the paragon tab a generic tab for all bikes, or was it merlin specific?

You will have to get with Boats(SAR_boats) on that one. He brought the tab to me.
Sorry

I've welded plenty of mild steel and chromoly, never got into aluminum or ti.

I assume you use TIG for that kind of stuff?

Looks really clean from what I can see. I've worked with a lot of welders over the years and it really is an art. Some of the stuff coming out of China, just blows me away, but the very best I've ever seen is still here in the states. I personally have never got worth a damn at it.

Hugh and I had a great time. I am really glad that he stayed late to do the job since I couldn't get off work early. Hugh ended up putting in a long day since he starts work at 530am and we didn't leave until after 7pm.

Hugh displayed a professionalism above and beyond what most people are used to. He treated my bike like it was his own, even going so far as hand buffing the areas that ended up getting scuffed and heat-colored (For those of you who don't work in the industry: Master welders don't do finishing work, ever. That is passed on to a less skilled shop person)

Of course when Hugh says I rocked it he means "He did great for a blind quadripalegic with parkinsons who learned to weld via correspondance course. At least he didn't screw up my awesome welding machine"

Good times. I did notice that the mill and lathe that were in the shop looked really lonely so I will have to get up there again to spend some quality time with them.

Thanks again Hugh. I owe you one
