Default Blackstar Rattler

Saw this 'fat bastard' yesterday on Blackstar, in the switchback section. The upside to some of these snakes being so freaking big this season is that at least you get a chance to see 'em ahead of time. Keep your eyes open out there!

Any of you experts know which variety this is? It was actually quite reddish in color, but the crappy cellphone pic doesn't do it justice.

That's an Artrattlius Specimnum, very common on Blackstar.

The Artrattlius would be the pesky critter I hear you northerners (I'm in SD County) talking about?

As for the snake in the picture, it's commonly called Red Diamondback. This is the kind I most often see in the local hills & higher desert. I think it's the most handsome of the local species (and most easily recognized) because of the red color and black & white stripes above the rattles. They get pretty big, but are not considered as aggressive as some. Nice nature moment -- probably raised your heartrate a tad!

It's a young one. Watch out for those. They typically release all of their venom.
