Default Big Sexy is born

I fell in love with the big wheels shortly after purchasing my Gary Fisher Rig 29 SS but unfortunately my knees did not. So, after a couple months of grinding on the SS it was time to make the bike a 1x9 and give my knees a little break. I also sold my Stumpjumper which meant this was going to be my only bike until this summer when I build another FS. I know you can ride a SS everywhere but I needed something with gears for now.

What I changed:

Chris King Hubs
DT Spokes and Nips
Salsa Skewers & Post clamp
Bontrager Race Wheels
SRAM PC 991 Powerlink Chain
SRAM 980 Cassette
SRAM X9 rear der
SRAM X0 shifter
Avid Juicy 7 brakes
Dangerboy levers
Matchmaker
Sunline V1 Carbon riser bars
Thomson Stem and Post
SDG Bel Air RL Ti saddle
ODI Lock-on grips
Crank Bros Candy Ti pedals

I think that's it but I could have missed something. This bike is a lot of firsts for me. It was my first SS now my first 1x9, it was my first hard tail in a decade, my first SRAM bike I always used Shimano, it is my first 29er and now its the first MTB bike not using platform pedals. I think I went as opposite as I could from my Stumpjumper. Hey, if youre gonna try something different why not go all out

I purchased the bike from Switchback Cyclery so I headed back there to have the swap made. Thanks to everyone at the shop for getting my bike rebuilt in a timely manner, going through all of my options with me, all the new parts, etc... The service at Switchback is top notch!

I also want to thank Tani at The Path for giving me some great prices on some of the parts for the rebuild. I really do appreciate that!

Ride Report:

I posted a RR a while back shortly after riding the bike for the first few times so I dont need to go over that again. As a 1x9 the bike seems perfect and solid. The response from the new hubs is phenominal and the SRAM shifter is really nice. No slop in my shifting and very quick movement. The Juicy 7 brakes are super strong and when complimented with Dangerboy levers the combo is literally, juicy. Having the extra gears definitely came in handy climbing the Three B's last weekend but it's still a good amount of work having just the 32 middle ring up front. So far everything is riding really good although I may change up the stem soon to bring the cockpit in a little more.

A few pics...

Thumbs up Very nice, grasshopper

When I grow up, I'll change my SS 29er to a 1 X 9... right now I'm having too much fun with just one speed. Very nice choices on the components.

Besides, if you ever get homesick for your lost single speed, here's a pic:

Damn..good deal.

Hey Jordan, are you using anything to keep the chain from dropping inwards? I see you have a bash to stop if from falling out - but you might want to think about adding a Jump-Stop or something.

Watch out for that chain. I broke a 991 after three rides. Went back to the 971 and no problems since.
