Default Trail Running - Aliso

Lately, I have been on a huge health kick. Typically during the week, I have been riding three times a week and have been lifting weights at the gym two-three times a week. So, yesterday I was planning on hitting up Aliso on my SS rig but had a crazy idea to go trail running instead. Change in gears. I strapped up my running shoes and headed over to TOTW.

I ran from TOTW to the bottom of the 133 via a few un-named trails and then back up another trail to TOTW. By the time I got to TOTW again, I realized how much more difficult trail running is than riding a bike around. I proceded down the ridge line to Lynx. Honestly, running down Lynx was almost as fun as riding down Lynx. After I hit the canyon floor, it was over to Cholla.

I took a little break at Cholla and talked with a few fellow mtbers. I told them that I planned on running to the top of Cholla in under 4 minutes. One guy claimed, but I do it in 5 minutes on the bike...How is that possible? After passing a few people on foot going uphill I hit the top in 3:40. I continued on back to TOTW and had a great view of sunset and met a few friends for beer afterwards.

What a great day! I just thought that everyone would enjoy reading this and might think about hitting the trail on foot next time rather than doing the usual. It is time to break the mold.

Funning thing is, I actually had a blast!

See ya guys on the trails.

Craig

Trail Running is a blast! I've been trail running for about the last 5 years on and off. I generally run about once a week just to mix things up. Running the same trails you ride gives you a completely different perspective and I've actually 'discovered' a few little trails while running that I now ride as well. It's great for the cardio, helps keep the knees from hurting and gives the legs (IMHO) a totally different work-out that just helps to give you better all around legs and lungs.

It's also cheaper!

I combine mtn biking, running, weights, climbing, backpacking and hiking into one big package to stay in shape. It's fun and i stay waaayy active. THe folks at work think I'm nuts...and I say they're nuts for not getting out doing this stuff.

Thanks for sharing man. I'm pumped now and am heading into town to hit up a new climbing gym. Take it easy.

Holy crap that's a hell of a lot of running. I usually do a small loop at Aliso. Let's see, start at MILF, go up either Lynx or Mathis, down Meadows, and back to MILF. I have almost as much fun running Aliso as I do riding it.

Next up I might have to try descending Rock-It.

Nice jog Craig. Your RunReport reminds me of that picture of you running in college.

Sounds like a lot of fun the way you described it but whenever I actually see people running up the trails while im riding it looks way too hard and ive always figured you dont get the same reward at the end like you would fdecending on a bike but maybe im wrong...i might just have to give it a shot one of these days.
Thanks for that extra push of motivation to switch it up

I am interested in buying some trail running shoes. Do you have any input or past experiences?

Allison, I have gained 10 lbs in the past few months. I am right at 170 lbs. I am trying to not be a "tapeworm." My goal is to be stronger and faster.

I am actually thinking about starting to race. Possibly a fun triathlon or mtb race. Who knows?? I would like to do a 24 hr race or something.

I do agree with you. Nothing compares to bombing down Lynx on a bike, but running down Lynx I found myself getting in a flow kinda like riding. Just a different style almost. Give it a try. Start small and build up to longer distances.

If you don't mind swimming look into an X-terra tri if you get into the trail running thing. They have them at Vail once or so a year, and sometimes at Bonelli in San Dimas.

You'd do well, I think!

I've also started doing a lotta running. Once in a while trail running. At first its painful and sucks but once you get past the first few runs its really great. I feel a little stronger on the bike, especially cardio wise.

Defintely check out some triathlons. This weekend I am doing the Lake Havasu Olympic Distance

April 26th I am doing an Xterra here in Arizona.

This summer I am planning on doing a bunch of Endurance events: Traverse, 12 Hours of Temecula and some more.

Out of everything I enjoy mountain biking the best, but its really fun to mix up your workouts, swim, road bike, run.... It makes a stronger person overall.

This summer I'll probably be running Aliso a few times.

If I see him swimming, I plan on drowning him so I won't have to race against him!

Wow, that is quite the run...! I live next to the Park and after work do what I would call a run/plod/walk...
#1 - Down Wood, to Coyote, back out Wood to Cholla and down Lynx
#2 - Up Cholla, down Lynx, down Wood (option of Coyote) turn around at Mathis back out Wood

More a fast hike as I am no runner!

I started trail running a little while back but have slacked off recently. It's a great way to mix it up a little. I thought I was decent shape but holy sh1t, running uses a different set of muscles and I find myself walking more than I like. I need to get back into it. Your route was a pretty big run for just starting off.

Same at my workplace. They can't fathom why or how and I can't fathom not.

I don't know how anyone could just...watch TV or something on their weekends! uggh

Trail Running shoes are cool and I actually use mine for a little road work as well. I'm using the Nike AirTrail Pegasus+. A lot of serious trail runners don't dig Nike's for some reason but these are shoes really designed for running and not just looks (They're the Bowerman Series). I've used New Balance and dug them and I'm looking into some of the more 'elite' brands like Inov8 and Salomon (sp?). Trail Runners don't seem to be broken down into foot styles (over/under pronation) as much as road shoes. Head over to B&N and pick up the latest issue of Trail Runner Magazine (it's bi-monthly) and they have a quick round-up of shoes in the back.

I'd love to get into the super long runs of like 50 or 100 miles but right now I'm enjoying my mtn bikes too much to run that much. I keep it to 5 or 6 miles once a week or so. We could get a new forum here and call it SoCal Trail Runners!

I really enjoyed trail running when I was training for the marathon...it keeps your exercise routine from getting too stale. You're right...it is soooo much harder to run up a hill than to bike it, IMO.

Check out RoadRunner for some good trail runners. I think Dan had a pair of Brooks that he was really happy with.

That's pretty cool you can run up Cholla faster than most anyone can ride up it. I wonder how fast you could run up it carrying you bike?

It would be totally funny to be grinding up cholla and get passed by a runner carrying a bike.
