Here is the email my buddy forwarded to me.
If I understand right "expires on 9th" means first day we could go in is the 10th. We've heard a lot about Harding closure being extended, but what about Maple Springs? Any info, Anyone? From: Debra R Clarke [mailto:drclarke@fs.fed.us] Sent: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 3:30 PM Subject: Forest Closure Order expires Nov 9 Hello Everyone, The existing fire closure order expires on Nov 9. We should have a new closure order for the burn area, Harding truck Trail and Maple Springs on Friday. The trails will reopen but anyone going off-trail or off-road could cause the closure to be reinstated. The burnt soil is very fragile and regrowth is needed. Maple Springs will remain closed until the Blue Light Mine cleanup is complete. We are uncertain if we can open the Maple Springs road to foot/bike traffic due to the hazmat materials piled in the area. Keith is checking on it. The Forest Service will post signs at all trail and road connections. When you are out patrolling please watch for visitors to be certain they are being safe and staying on the trail. I will send an update as soon as I hear more. I know, I know. I've read that thread many times. Sometimes I felt that if I read it again and again and then once again, the FS will open the forest sooner... The thing is, the email was sent today. So I guess this is the latest updated on the closure. Also, this is the first time I hear about Maple Springs not opening. And was really hoping someone would have any additional info on this. |

Maple Springs will remain closed until the Blue Light Mine cleanup is complete.
We are uncertain if we can open the Maple Springs road to foot/bike traffic due to the hazmat materials piled in the area. Keith is checking on it. For the reason, Maple Springs will probably not open on schedule on Nov 10. Debra Clarke of the USFS called me this morning and clarified the email that was sent out. Apparently, during the Blue Light Mine cleanup, there was a change in work crews and the work was stopped. The work stoppage delayed in the hazmat cleanup and may not be done by the 10th. This calls to question about the Silverado Trail (Motorway) which ends at the bottom of Maple Springs. The USFS is working on getting that open by the 10th. Lets hope they do. If not, the Motorway will also be remain closed. I will continue to update this thread with the latest info as I receive them. |

OCRegister.com article about trails reopening:
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/t...antiago-closed Some excerpts: Maple Springs Road will remain closed until work associated with cleanup of tailings at the old Blue Light Mine is complete. The road could reopen as early as Thanksgiving weekend or early December, depending on when work is complete. Some trails are going to remain closed: Harding Truck Trail and Silverado Truck Trail. Silverado Truck Trail is aka Motorway, correct? So this looks like Blackstar/Motorway loops are off limits for now still? ![]() |

Yes, the Silverado Trial is the Motorway and I've already spoken with Debra Clarke the trails manager for the Trabuco District. We may have to get a permit if it is still closed by the 15th, but my hope is that the cleanup will be complete by then.

Well the good news is that we can ride the STT to old camp! I rode the Luge yesterday and had a blast, and Kudos to the people involved in the re-route of the final section.
