Default 29 wheel suggestions

Searched and found plenty of 29er tire reviews but I am looking for some wheel suggestions. Will be getting the 1x9 setup next week and was planning on using the Bontrager wheels that came with the bike to save on cash with Chris King hubs and DT spokes/nips. Thinking about possibly scraping that and getting new wheels as well but still not sure.

I know there arent a ton of options and I was hoping the Mavic 717 29er wheels would be out already but they probably wont be for a few months from what I have heard. Thought about using mine for now to wait for those but then ofcourse thats another rebuild.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I use The Bontrager hoops with Chris King hubs on my geard hard tail and they work great! I would only change the hoops if I made a taco out of one. But after two years of riding three different sets of wheels I have yet to have a problem with any of them.

I Bonty Race Lites that came with my Niner. They run nicely and have not had any problems. The hubs are supposedly made by DT Swiss. They look and sound similar.

Still, I have my eye on a set of Hope Pro IIs with Stan's Archs when funds become more available. These can be had for around $525, so it's not a bad deal when you consider what off the shelf wheels cost. You could also look at American Classic 29er Discs. Those are light and seem to be quite popular.

Hope Pro 2's

Can be converted to geared / ss / TA / QR

They were recommended to my by Tani and a friend that runs them. No complaints thus far. I've got them on Stans Arch rims with DT straight gauge spokes and AL You Mini Um Nipples.

Nipples, such a funny word... say it out loud... come on... NIPPLES.

Honestly though, I don't think you can beat the CK stuff in terms of quality and coolness factor. One thing is for damn sure, you gotta pay to play!

Good luck

Looks like Jensen has them on sale... or at least at a good price

I just scored a brand new set of Stans Flow with DT 240s. These should handle my 200 lbs better.

I had an American Classic rear and hated it, the hub kept coming loose every few rides.

been running crossmax 29er on my RIP for 4 months now and they have held up great. They also are pretty light and I have no problem climbing with them. The finish on the spokes tends to get taken off by rocks getting kicked up into the wheels. I hear good things about the Industry 9 wheels too.

I have been really happy with the Velocity Blunts that I have on my Paragon. Nice wide, strong and not too heavy 480g. We have a black pair at the shop. Tim built mine up on DT 240's with straight gauge spokes.

YOu are already dropping the coin on the King Hubs and headset.....do the rims at the same time. Easier and cheaper to do it once than twice. More than likely you won't be able to use the old spokes.

Just a thought.

No CK headset for me its an integrated so I cannot. I picked up a few new things today to add to the build so the Bont's will have to cut it for now! hopefully the hubs will be in tomorrow so I can get it done!

Actually the black set we had at the shop are on my 29er singlespeed...nice rims. Built my CK's into 'em with DT supercomps...and if I'm not mistaken yours are built up with DT DB spokes.
