Default First Snake of the Year

Looks like it's warm enough for our cold blooded friends to join the springtime celebration.

Saw this guy crossing the bike path above Arroyo Trabuco this morning. About 3' long.

On my lunch time ride, I was thinking about it being warm enough for the snakes to be out. I didn't see any, but a hiker told me he saw four. This was out at El Moro. I rode the single tracks with a little more alertness today.

I don't know what it is, but seeing snakes makes me want to hurl (I have a lot of respect for them and hope to stay as far away from them as possible, but they make my stomach churn!)

Cool pic nevertheless

It's mating season for reptiles. Some of them are looking for love in all the wrong places, ie trails that hikers, bikers and equestrians frequent. Some may not be able to stop in time and run them over.

Wink Ya call that a Snake do ya??

Now that's a snake

This is the golf course off Hartley Bridge Road in Macon
This is a timber rattler killed last week-end. It is by far the biggest rattle snake I have ever seen. Although diamond back rattlers get this big and maybe even bigger, I did not know those timber rattlers reached that size. I have not talked to Ollie about how many rattles it had or it's actual size and length, since he is about 5'9', the snake appears to be at least 8-feet long if not longer, and is bigger around than his arms. He killed the snake on number 8 at Oakview while looking for his ball. He killed the snake with a 2 iron. The man holding the snake is the greens keeper.

I saw a 15inch-ish rattlesnake today at lunch on Mathis.

I was grinding up and notice, "Hey that stick has rattles on the end...HEY that stick has a HEAD!"

Thats never good for keeping the average heart rate low.

that greens keeper may be brave but he needs to have his ass fired. that is the most raggedy golf course i've ever seen.

I've been a Paramedic since '99 and the advice from the CDC is the most accurate. Cutting yourself with a knife is the DUMBEST thing you can do as is trying to suck out the poison. Snake bite kits are a cruel joke and should be taken off store shelves to keep people from hurting themselves.

Remove yourself from where the snake is, sit down, keep the bite area below the level of your heart as best you can, call EMS (911). That's it! If you can, take a cell phone photo of it for identification since anti-venin's are species specific.

Control life-threatening bleeding if you know how and, if you have medical training, apply a wide, gently constricting band to slow the return of venous blood from the area if the bite is on an extremity. Otherwise, keep your cool and wait for EMS.

Most often, victims are MALE, knew the snake was there and were MESSING WITH IT. Leave it alone, wait for it to pass or go another way.

End Rant.
