I'm taking an Intro to Digital Photography class and I have a final photo project to do that I would like to somehow involve mountain biking. I just need to print 8-10 photos in the end following a narrative or theme and while I haven't finalized an idea yet I would like to attempt to capture the experience of a mountain biker.
I suspect if I can produce anything like the photos MTBill takes I would earn and A, but I'd prefer to take tons of shots at interesting angles. Would anyone in San Diego be interested in being a subject for an hour or two sometime during this weekend, next week, or the following weekend? This would hopefully involve some actual mountain biking, but it would also involve a lot of going up or down the same segment of trail over and over or simply standing still. Additionally, I will listen to any ideas that you guys might have to offer to me for a project. If I have learned one thing taking this class is that I have no artist vision. ![]() EDIT: Bonus points for people with beautiful bikes. |

I would go for a variety of techniques in addition various compositions. Panning, assorted flash techniques, etc.
Race venues are a great place to take photos. Action, interesting personalities, emotion, drama, stories to be told.... full of opportunity with captive subjects. |

How much time do you have to do this? When is the project due? The more time you have, the more expansive you can make the project.
For example: Go on the ride this Sunday @ LPQ. Take photos of the people on the ride showing: Group comraderie Cool sites you see Awesome action shots Go to a Tuesday Night Ride. Then you get what you have above, with the added difficulty of low light photography. Then, showcase the "behind the scenes" work of MTBers. Go here: http://sdmba.com/index.php?option=com_jcalpro&Itemid=30 Look at the events like the SDMBA monthly meeting and trail work. Ask if you can take pictures at the SDMBA meeting. Then go to the trail work events and take pictures of people working the trail. It all just depends on what the story is that YOU want to tell, and fitting it into the constraints of your project. I'd be willing to be a subject or help out in any other way if it fits in my schedule. |

Many ways to tackle this. Here are a few ideas. Photos: of a rider working on his/her bike before the race/ride. Rider gearing up with pads. Mutiple photos on bike (wide shot-showing the mountain, tight shot-showing intensity of the rider's face.) Rider fixing a flat or getting up after a crash. Rider sitting on the ground with his bike as sweat poors down his face. Tight shot of a true mountain biker sippin' on a cold beer post-ride. Don't forget detail shots. And most of all have fun. Hope the photojournalism advice helps...

I'm having a busy day today and I don't have to respond to everyone. Thank you for all the advice though, I definitely like the ideas.
My TA didn't seem to like my ideas and for the sake of getting through the class easily I am going a different route this time around (I've learned photography isn't for me). I will see you all on the trails soon and maybe I will bring my camera along anyway. ![]() |
