Default Trail Work Ed/Class

At the SHARE meeting, we discussed having a trail maintenance class, sponsored by SHARE, open to all. Robin Lemonds said that he has wanted to do such a class and would gladly put together a presentation for everyone, if there is an interest.

So, I'd like to start a poll to see how many people would be interested in attending such a class and the prefered time (weekend morning, afternoon, evening, or weekday evening).

This would be a basic trail work education class and would cover such topics as the basics in building trails, how to maintain them and the tools needed/proper use.

An excellent review for those whom have done trail work, work independently, those whom would like to expand their knowledge and a great start for those whom would like to understand it and become more active in the local trail programs.

Sorry Wrecker, but here's a website for instruction on how to build trails for advanced riders: http://www.dirt-jumping.com/building_dirt_jumps.html

It would be more of a learning type class, if during the day, then perhaps we could add in additional trail work--so you can work the skills.

But, the idea was to teach about why trail work is done, what you need to do to establish and maintain a trail, how to do it, etc. So, more along the lines of a presentation or lecture.

The exact location would have to be worked out, once we can show a sufficient interest in the subject.....SHARE is OC based.

edit: this is for those interested in building/maintaining our local/state/national forest trails and what is included in that--dirt jumps are for private areas and will not be covered.

I have attended a class like this before. It was well advertised, more than a few commited to it, and ultimately almost no one showed up.
I think it would work better if it were coordinated with an existing trailwork day - An instructor could take the newbies for instruction while veterans started work. They could then follow up the instruction with hands on training.

I think sitting in on the course would be good for any rider, and not just those who do trail work. For example, I'm sure they'll explain some of the techniques used to drain water off the trail, so you'll understand why some trails may use rubber flaps, railroad ties, rocks, or simply side-exiting ruts to drain the water off. Perhaps knowing how and why a trail is built a certain way may help some riders learn some techniques on how to ride them.

I would be interested in attending, but it's doubtful that the time and location of the event would line up with a time that I'm available.
