What makes one a newbie and when does one get bumped up in class?
As far as I can tell it is a relative term and it has to do with both bike skills and conditioning. I wouldn’t want to park at the top of a trailhead then do a five mile decent with a rider with good skills and only to find that the rider couldn’t climb back out, Or do the opposite and start a ride with a newbie that is good condition only to find that they have no bike skills when they crash their brains out on every technical section of the trail.

Segregated non-bubb.

technically... a "newbie" as i understand it, was anyone new to STR. "newbie" rides are slower paced social rides where you can meet lots of new people and have a some great laughs. lots of advanced riders go on "newbie" rides. i have often poked fun at Nam (TKBlazer) for "poaching newbie rides".
once you are no longer a "newbie" you are then a "non bubb". "bubb"s are the people that formed STR. you cannot become a "bubb" unless you ride weekly in "Aliso Woods", or some other hangout over there. you can also become a "bubb" if you are directly friends with guero or lbmtb, as they run the site. since i live in Riverside county, and am no longer a "newbie", i am a "segregated non-bubb". hope that clears things up. ![]() ![]() by the way, this is entirely a joke. ride, smile, be happy! ![]() |

My own personal vision of what a Newb is:
1. anyone who can't wait to ride the fully loop due to the technical aspect of it. 2. any one that refers to the above ride as "the loop" 3. any one that thinks someone is a serious technical rider when he/she clears the loop. 4.If you've never heard of a trail called Valhalla in Aliso 5. oh...nevermind..I'll get back to work now. |

What makes me a Newbie:
1. I think the fully loop is scarry at night (or anything at night for that matter). 2. The most technical aspect I know of my bike is that it's purple. 3. I still ride with a road helmet because I fear true mtb commitment. 4. If there is a rut on the trail I get lock arm and steer into it. 5. I don't ride with a camelback but my water bottle is color coordinated with my bike. 6. Clipping into pedals on my bike terrifies me. 7. Riding off a curb makes me giggle. 8. The scar on my elbow pisses me off. 9. I now can spit like a guy because riding can collect bugs in your teeth and if you spray when you spit, everyone gets some. 10. I find no humiliation in admitting these things. ![]()

What bike shop to take my bike to and have the air changed in the tires? What is up with that Steven Jackson fellow?….he is kinda weird. What is Presta and what is Schrader? Are they bike brands? Can I get replacement reflectors for my pedals? Where can you buy kick stands in different colors? What is a Chuma? Who are Homers? They sound scary. Is DeeZee really an A-Hole or is he being sarcastic? Has FoShizzle actually ridden a bike or does he just build them? Why do the Boston Redsox suck?
