A Newbie is to Mountain Biking what a Squid is to surfing. The difference is the Newbie, when climbing, always has the right of way to other riders. A Downhiller is similar to the surfer with the "Locals Only" mentality, a false sense of entitlement to something they can never own.

interesting, what else do you call the loop? I use the Fully loop or THE LOOP I've never heard of that that trail. Am I a newbie? ![]() IMO a newbie is not judgemental, they just want to ride a bike, any bike on any trail. |

I wasn't sure whether you were joking or not with the lack of emoticons. I don't know you and your sense of humor, or lack thereof, so I gave you the benefit of the doubt. Please don't make those generalizations when a new member is asking a question. It gives them the impression that we are some kind of clique that doesn't like to share the trails. You are correct. We will never own the trails. No one will. STR members will never exclude or prevent anyone from riding the trails we ride. On the contrary, we've always welcomed them with open arms. OK, I'll get off the soap box now. To the original poster. Smitty, sorry to have hijacked your thread. I'm assuming by "newbie" you mean a beginner rider and not new to the group. If so, my definition of a Newbie is someone who is relatively new to the sport and is just learning the ropes. For example, how to use the shifters properly or ride something slightly more technical than a flat fire road. Not all newbies are equal so it's hard to have a clear cut definition. On the one hand, you can have a newbie who's very athletic and picks things up quickly and ride right along with the intermediates. On the other hand, you can have a former couch potato who has to take a break every quarter of a mile on a flat paved road. Both are welcome and fit in with our group. Then there are those who have been riding for years and still can barely stay upright and I still consider a newbie. ie. STR member Cougar Bait. He'll make any first time rider look like a pro if you ride next to him. Duc

Nah, I can't imagine anyone would think that of you. I was just kidding. I apologize if you thought I meant you or gave others the impression that you are like that.
I've only ridden with you once, but I remember you all were very accommodating and nice to me even though I wasn't even a member of STR. I heard about your ride from someone else and decided to crash it hoping I wouldn't be too much of a burden for you guys. You all made me feel very welcome. You even took pictures of me and posted them. ![]()

It's tough for a group this diverse to come up with a definitive answer.
It would be nice for new members, lurkers or even vets to refer to a sticky post listing the finer points of riding levels. We could take it a step further by developing a rating system for trails that caters to the listed riding levels. People could post a ride with a riding level reference so people who have never been there can decide weather its safe or worth their time. I am definitely a newb. I used race expert and still retain a fair amount of skill and fitness, but I haven't done much riding in socal and I just joined STR. So, I never know what people are talking about or where places are. A system sounds complex, but it could work. Maybe a system already exists in which case you can slap me. I've been driving jeeps for a few years and there is an informal yet widely used and handy rating system for that sport. We just list the necessary equipment, if body damage is likely, if there are scary rollover spots and how long it takes barring mechanicals. It keeps the newbs safe most of the time.
