its sort of the same. powder coat is where one part is positively charged (paint...er, powder) and your frame is negatively charged- the paint jumps onto the frame.
then, it gets baked on! benefit: less mess. the powder is just that- a dry powder, NOT wet paint. better on the environment as well.

safe to say you are not a custom painter. less mess?? have you ever tried one of those DIY deals from Eastwood? They work killer but I make much less mess with my Binks. |

My experience is as follows. Same frame. Same color. Different results.
Frame - 2000 Dean Private. Originally painted Dean (Kawasaki) Green by Spectrum Repainted by Olympic circa 2005 or 2006 with Dean (Kawasaki) Green First paint job experienced some cracking. I rode the frame very hard for a couple years back in college, but it shouldn't have needed the numerous touch-ups like it did. Also to my disappointment, there was a tiny amount of bubling near the dropouts. That was not being cool. Olympic's paintjob has held up great. While I don't ride the bike quite like I used to, I am still very happy with how it's held up over the past few years. Close inspection upon receipt of the completed frame showed no bubbling or other issues. Unless I need a fully custom job, an area in which Spectrum is unmatched, I can't think of a reason why I wouldn't choose Olympic. |
