I was thinking of making a lightweight padded box that would mount to the water bottle cage screws on my zion frame hopefully big enough I could fit my 30d with a small prime lens. seems like a somewhat protected area unless you ride chiquito with it and drop it on its side into a rock

dude, you could seriously be rich, thats a great idea, make a hard case that will attach to a bike,
i use my 40d with the 50mm 1.2 its really small and compact, that would be perfect.

thats the next great american invention.

Ive been using the Ipod case from Timbuk2 and it works nicely. Very convenient and I have quick access to it.

No, really the idea of a case tha twould hold something like a 5D plus a prime lens (85MM is my fav) would be really sweet!

I did Germany with a similar rig but had the camera mounted on the front of the handlebar.
Now if I could only get a shock absorbing hard case...

Right, a hard case that is shaped like a dslr has a clasp that will keep it closed while riding and be able to take a little hit, i would say mount to the bars would be a good spot. if you put it inside the midddle of the fram area your legs i would imagine would get in the way,
but, for sure i would buy one,

I use the same leather pouch thing that my Blackberry curve fits.. it has a magnetic flap that keeps the camera in place however I can get to it in no time...

Dang. Baller. I could only afford the 1.8.

I think some people use a chest bag to carry the SLR on rides. Something I want to try.

it looks like you may have enough room down low above the BB and chainrings where you wouldnt notice the widthe because the cranks and your legs are at there widest point right there. I need to mess with the idea either that or throw it in the front of the triangle

i would feel it should be away from movement such as pedaling, the front of the triangle would be the best spot, but in alot of bikes thats a very narrow area.
i would think a very rigid conection system to attach it to the frame is a must. something like velcro i dont think would do the trick.

marriage shoots are super high stress,
I'll figure something out for the camera mount I'm just trying to think of places with minimal impact if I fall over cliped in or something

Back on topic, I got this Tamrac 'ultra-thin' case at Best Buy.
Velcro front closure, and a double velcroed back strap that is easy to put on/off a pack.

Perfect for a Canon SD. Looks better than the photo.
