Default Big surf while the trails dry-out

Yesterday I learned my lesson riding my local trails a day after rain. Muddy... fun but sketchy. Now i'm waiting at least 2-3 days before riding here again!

In the interim, however, the surf is pumping.
Any other surfing MBers out there? Did you surf today?
If so, where?

Good point!
However, this is a quick moving swell... literally here today and gone by tomorrow evening. As in most areas of my life, I take my chances.

I haven't been in the water in a long while but I'd do the same. I caught a nasty, nasty cold once - that was enough.

The indicator bacteria levels are THROUGH the roof at the beaches for about 3 days after rain! And the problem with going to beaches even if they are not closed due to contamination is that to analyze the water and test for bacteria, it takes about 12-24 hours (depending on which indicator bacteria the lab is testing for) to complete and analyze... So they can't officially close the beach until they get back positive results (ie 24 hours after its already been contaminated).

Man it sucks though to have this high of surf so close after the rain! It's like a waste of good waves.

So basically it's a personal choice but chances are there ARE very high bacteria counts right now (from all the "Urban Slober" as we like to call it at work), if you do go today, JUST DONT SWALLOW ANY WATER! Have fun and take a thorough shower afterwards.

If anyone has any questions about the science behind it feel free to PM me. =)

I surfed all the time for many years before I discovered mountain biking 4 years ago. Currently i haven't surfed for over a year-you can tell which sport I like better. I kinda got fed up with the dense crowds in the lineup in OC (wouldn't call it surfing actually, more like sitting and waiting for a wave without 30 guys on it already) and the competetive/egotistical attitude many surfers have. Whereas even if the trails are crowded with bikes (STR rides!) I can still ride all the trail I want and everyone is way cool for the most part. Better exercise too. My main surfing buddy is a little pissed off that i don't go anymore- I'm trying to convince him to get a MTB, I know he'd love it but he's resistant to change or something. Also our trails, especially in the Santa Ana's are much prettier and feel more like wilderness than our mostly urbanized beaches.
Mountain biking con: way more expensive!

All this being said, i live in laguna 2 blocks up from Thalia, and last night I could hear the surf pounding. As soon as I get my tax return I'm gonna get a new board and wetsuit and get back into it a little.
