Haha I've actually done that before. Broke the bar right at the stem, so I jammed a stick in there and shoved the broken end back on. Coming down San Juan with half a bar is not fun.

Todays emergency trail fix brought to you by: Carbon Fiber

Just think.. Most high end frames are made from the same stuff. I can't wait to see what happens to them in 3-5 years of UV, moisture and dirt exposure

When will MTBers realize that there is a difference between strength and durability?

Which is why I use a 31.8mm carbon bar instead of a 25.4.

I've seen an aluminum bar fail right at the stem. There are lots of reasons for why a bar made of any material will fail. The material itself is just one variable in a whole chain of variables that includes initial design, proper installation, using the bar within spec, periodic inspection, etc.

That's cool a cool fix, though. Kept on riding.

That looks like it could have potentially been a very painful failure...hope the rider is O.K.

The carbon fiber and epoxy that is used is non hydroscopic, it will not absorb moisture so that will have little to no effect. Carbon fiber does not stress like aluminum and should have an indefinite life span. Now in regards to UV, I have the same concerns, but most frames are made with the optimum amount of UV additives to prevent degradation. Still it's only rated as a 10 year protectorant. But that is measured in direct sunlight comapable to an enviornment like AZ or FL.

Your chances of aluminum failing are 10:1 before carbon fiber.
