hi, once again... thinking about my whole new bike purchase that is going to happen... and just rememebered i need a lock! just wondering what locks all you guys use? let me know what you think might be good...
i guess this will be assuming your bike is about 1k to 2k? have you ever locked up your expensive bike? am i totally out of my mind to even consider locking it up? i am thinking about the kryptonite chain? well, i searched and people seem to use u-locks and stuff... but i think the thread was alittle old... let me know what you guys do lately... thanks for the help... |

Are you commuting and leaving it locked up outside?
If you are, use the thickest ulock you can get in addition to a very thick cable lock. U lock the frame to a pole and run the cable through both wheels and the pole/ulock. If you have a really nice saddle/seatpost, you can get a small thin cable lock to lock it to the toptube. If not, get the thickest kryptonite cable lock you feel comfortable carrying with you. |

I use a "bull dog mini," on both my bikes. It's small, I can stuff it down the back of my jeans when I ride to school or around town and it's fairly beefy. If someone is carrying something that will get through that thing, f-it, worse things could happen.

I use a Kryptonite cable lock to secure bikes to my hitch rack. A 5' cable is just barely long enough for 2 bikes. If I bought another one, I'd go for a 6' cable. I don't leave my bikes locked up for very long.

The Kryptonite New York Chain Lock (called the Fahgettaboudit lock). That thing is heavy but it comes with a guarantee.

If you want a Kryptonite 5' cable lock (1/2" diameter cable) I have a bunch for sale.
$10 ea. plus shipping or pick up in Aliso Viejo. pm me if interested. Keep in mind that if a thief really wants your bike, a lock isn't going to stop them. It will hopefully make them think it's too much work and steal someone else's pic of the lock

Dirt Rag mentioned go with a mini u-lock because it's much harder to get a hack saw on it or a device to bend it from the inside of the lock.

i guess another question i have is... when you guys go on rides, where do you guys leave the bike? i know some of the rides have meets and meals after? are the places where you guys go bike friendly and you guys just sit with it? or do you guys actually bring along a small lock?

oh, so ususally you guys eat close to the cars... i guess if that is the case, i can stuff the bikes back into the car...
i guess when the time comes, i will just use a moderately lighter lock to hold it all... |

Just keep in mind that in high-theft areas, like around college campuses, even locking your nice bike up won't keep it safe. Stopping by the beer garden after a ride you are probably good with locking your bike up and/or keeping it in sight which is what I do.
It helps to have renter's or homeowner's insurance that will cover your bikes and document your bikes. This way if they do get jacked you are covered and are only out the deductible. |

I use two different kinds of locks at the same time; u-lock and cable lock. I almost never leave my bikes on the back of my car, I'm just way to afraid of getting jacked. It may be a slight pain in the ass to lock em up all the time but I'd rather do that and feel safe than cry at night if my bike got stolen.
All that and my bike is probably worth far less than other peoples' bikes on here. |

Well, you'll never get 100% back on your bikes if they get stolen because of "depreciation". Our insurance did a pretty good job covering us when our bikes got ripped off but they basically took 20% off the top.
I mean, would we want to go without it? Hell no! But it's not perfect. |

I use bike cuffs which I love because they are easy to tote around...... I also use them on a bike I cobbled together from spare parts and a $10 frame I found at a thrift store, when I go out to eat or to get movies or something. I would never lock any of the bikes that I love no matter how good the lock or what kind of guarantee. Plus with the guarantees you have to prove the lock was broken to claim on it so unless they leave the broken or picked lock behind you are screwed. Get insurance or a cheap second bike.
