hi, i am thinking about attempting a trail or two in a next week or two... i was browsing around for trails... and i noticed that some people talk about hike a bike up to top? i got the feeling that it was because some part of the trail was illegal to ride? or was it cause it was steep? something about a ranger at the top, so i don' think it was cause it was too steep?
anwyays, if i am correct to think it was due to no riding on certain parts... how do i know where to ride and where not to ride?i really don't want to start off on the wrong foot, specially if i want to ride with my gf and embarresing her will definately put a stop to this whole hobby... thanks for the help buys... i think in partucular, i want to try the fullerton loop... seems like it may be kinda fun to atleast try a portion of it with my GF and get her feet wet along with mine... it is kinda close to me, but i would have to drive there for sure... |

Hike-A-Bike or HAB just means walking your bike up a steep part of the trail that some people can't ride up....which I happen to do a lot of

okay... i guess i was thinking on the safe side...
well, that is no problem at all... i think i may hike 2 bikes if my gf gets tired... but at that point i may just have her go back... are the loops usually one way only? |

Hey Jason, Gene here, No. Most trails you can ride both directions although most will ride them in one direction like the Fully Loop. You should go on Sunday's there to Pugz's ride. It's newbie friendly, but this Sunday, I think most will be at Ruts Birthday/charity ride

This is a good picture of a HAB...
![]() Picture by Allison (yes she's a girl, and yes she did HAB this) I'm guessing if you take your GF on something like this for her first ride out, she'll probably kill you.

a good hike a bike event are those put together by Maxwell. Known as the Push a Kona! If you want to HAB this will be the ride to join... I am currently in the process of looking for a 6'' AM frame to replace my 5'' XC. One thing is for sure though, on any ride that I take my Demo 8- EVERYTHING is a hike a bike
sometimes even the flats.

Unless she is a truly hard core sufferer, the one thing that will bring newbies back is FUN. A first ride that is seen as a 'sufferfest', could make getting her out after that difficult.
Without knowing either of you other than what you have posted, I'd err to the side of being a bit conservative with regard to where I'd recommend a beginner (especially a girlfriend ) to ride.Truly her first time? I'd recommend going to Pt. Mugu State Park (aka: Sycamore Canyon) at the north end of Malibu. Ride the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road (Valley Trail) in from the coast. If she likes that, return to the trailhead via Ranch Center Road / Wood Canyon Trail. This will be a fun ride, but not likely to scare away a newbie that is willing to develop their MTB skills. http://www.venturacountytrails.org/T...AreaTrails.htm If she likes that and wants to try something more challenging, then I'd recommend the Fullerton Loop. I wouldn't recommend The Loop for a first timer: 1) unless they were with someone that knew the trail and was good/patient with beginners. 2) It's not easy to follow the trail if you don't know where you are going although you could always eventually find you way back to the car via streets. 3) And although The Loop is not real technical or contain any extended climbs, it does have much more of those elements than does Sycamore Canyon. JMHO. |

Jason,
I'm going to go against the grain and advise against taking her to Fullerton Loop if you ever wish to A.) keep her as a gf or B.) have a hope of getting her to ride again. While the group is VERY beginner/newbie friendly I don't think the trail is. Unless she is competitive, in good shape or has a good sense of humor/likes to push herself physically, she may not like it. There will be quite a few hills. Some are somewhat steep, but short, and a couple of them are kind of long. Where there's up there's down. They are bumpy and rutted at times and may be a little too steep her her taste. Total mileage for the loop is somewhere between 10 - 12 miles depending on which routes you take. I used to take my beginner friends there and most of them were not very keen on returning. None of the females enjoyed it for their first time out. No, I do not push them to keep up with me nor do I race up ahead and wait for them. I ride/walk at their pace and push their bike up the hill if need be. Ever since I started taking beginners to Sullivan Canyon I've had many repeat riders, 4 girls and 3 guys. One of the girls is even one of the biggest couch potato you'll ever meet. There's not a TV show she isn't up to date with. YMMV. I'm not trying to discourage you or tell you not to try it, but this is just one person's experience and opinion. I would suggest taking her to Aliso Woods and stay on the fireroad unless she feels ready for more then you can go up the singletrack. I'd be more than happy to be your tour guide there. Duc

Here's a nice pic of HAB:
![]() FWIW, hit up Aliso & Woods Canyon in Aliso Viejo. You can just ride the main flat part of the area at first, maybe try the creek crossings (have her go through the water if she feels like continuing), but skip out any of the hills. I forget what the main path there is called. But, there's some singletrack and then pavement right there so she can choose which to ride. Then you make a right and follow the fire road until she wants to turn around. Very flat, very easy. EDIT: Here is a great route!! http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=1689 From that link you can get directions to the trailhead, look at the route with her, see the elevation profile, and print up trail point by point directions. |

If Fully is close to you then go to Chino Hills State Park. Ride Telegraph Canyon, it's an out and back Fireroad. Chino Hills is beautiful right now so I'm sure the scenery will sway her to ride again. Whenever you guys are tired, just turn around and enjoy the mellow downhill ride back to the car.

Both of the HAB photos are from the New Year's Eve ride a group of us did on Bell Ridge. Bell Ridge is in the Santa Ana's. We started at Trabuco Creek Rd. in RSM, rode the fire road up to Trabuco singletrack, climbed/hiked that, then started on the "rolling" Bell Ridge
It's an advanced ride! If you want to see 21 people suffering on NYE together in great weather, here it is! New Year's Eve Bang Ride I've never had so much fun HABing before ![]() |

Here's the route, it's not an official route but it'll tell you the route profile:
http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=6306 Basically, park at Carbon Canyon Park. Head east out of the park following Lambert Rd. You'll soon see a metal gate to your right. This is where you'll enter Chino Hills St. Park. When you cross the bridge, you'll come to another metal gate. Go straight, this will be Telegraph Canyon. Left and straight up the hill is Northridge (don't go this way, it's painful). At about the 5 mi mark, you'll hit the first picnic table. One more mile and you're at 4 Corners (another picnic table) well worth the ride here because the view is gorgeous this time of year. Have a snack, rest up and go back the same way. It'll probably take you guys 1 hour to reach 4 Corners. Quote:
