Default **Official Newbie Ride Event Thread**

It looks like Duan threw me into the fire (just kidding) and Allison added more fuel (just kidding) to have me start this event. As promised, here is the official thread after being totally wrecked in Vegas over the weekend. I have no idea how I am typing this post as the monitor is forever spinning in front of me Please keep all comments, opinions, input, jabs at me, or whatever it is for the event on this thread.

I am looking for additional input on the following before I post a poll for a location and time:

-Trail: Maybe in the 8-10 mile range and a two hour time frame. Something not hard or overally technical because I would really feel bad sending someone up a super climb or down some rocky downhill for their first time. I'm also looking for a trail that is easy to regroup several times. I have ridden nearly every trail in O.C. but I would also like to find a location that can include the L.A. and S.D. folks (which I'm not familiar with). Additionally, based on a specific trail, I would like to have everyone gather for lunch and a brew after the ride at a local spot. I would be willing to find out if we can get a group rate discount.

-Time/Date: I know most of us like to start at the crack of dawn but I think an 8:00-8:30 start time would be better. OMR, Allison, and Gene, mentioned VQ is coming up so March or April would be a better time frame for everyone. If there is a race going on during any of those months, please post so I can work around it.

-Sponsorship: It would be cool to get at least one shop out there to support this event *Cough* Adrenaline/The Path *Cough*. Possibly give discounts, free mini-tune ups etc. Also, possibility to give out stickers or maybe raffle off some random STR goods. *Cough* God Father *Cough* Great time to break out the new STR tent as well!

-Need riders for help: Based on a specific trail, I'll need at least one sweeper, middle, and lead to keep it moving, help anyone that needs repairs, or to fend off mountain lions Foo, you get the mountain lions.

I want this to be a fun filled event that provides new comers to STR, the mountain biking community, local shops, and trails.

Most "importantly", Nobody Gets Left Behind

How many miles and how many hours should the ride be to make it worth traveling for?

Thanks for posting this and I look forward to attending!

Races & Events in April: (see Allison's below too - tons more detail)

April 4-6 Hurkey Creek Camp out #2
April 17-20th Sea Otter
April 26-27 24hrs of Vail Lake and 24hrs of Hurkey Creek

Also FWIW: Newbie as discussed before can be 2 things. #1. New to STR and #2 new to the sport. Both will RSVP!

Please take this into consideration when planning a route, You will probally need more than 1 sweep. These rides get big fast and you'll need help with all levels of STR riders.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm not yet sober....I edited the original post. I'm thinking 8-10 miles about 2 hours....

If it's a trail I'm familiar with, I'd be more than happy to sweep and provide mechanical support. I'd also be more than happy to show up early to do some minor tune-ups/bike checks.

I'll be posting one for Marshall Canyon at the end of March. I know Neil has SART for the next SS ride on the 8th and Allison has pretty much summed up the rest. I'm going to lock down the 22nd for Marshall. That ride has been a long time waiting for the I.E. and I WAS going to continue my tour of newbie rides to the westside next to spread the newbie love. I will be glad to help as sweep or lead, but these next few months are really busy for most of the seasoned riders because of all the events and races.

Going into peak MTB season every weekend is going to be filled. Usually those dates are set a year in advance. I'm pretty sure every weekend if filled the event just hasn't been posted somewhere yet...

I say set it for June 7th National Trail Day.

FWIW, if you guys want to put on Newbie rides and get the newer members involved, don't worry as much about everyone else possibly.

Weekends like Sea Otter probably won't draw an enormous crowd out of So Cal (so basically most will be here in town still).

I know we all hate to miss out, but don't feel like you have to schedule around each event!

I would suggest picking a day where there aren't big So Cal events, though. (Such as the weekend of VQ, or the STR Idyllwild weekend )

I agree, but the problem is that I'll be at the VQ and hopefully the STR campout. I was planning Marshall after Dailey and the holidays, but rains, bad knees and training took up those weekends. I will get with Mike (Pain Freak), CC, Nancy and Roger about possible routes soon.

You misunderstood. I meant that it can be scheduled for weekends like Sea Otter or the NORBA stuff, but not VQ or the STR campout, since those are days that more than racers will be at.

Sorry for the confusion.

Too bad I didn't know. I rode Dead Horse Loop twice this weekend. It was PERFECT out there. I saw ONE other person in 14 miles yesterday.

No confusion, I meant that "we" the ones who normally put on or attend newbie rides, wheither it's lead, sweep or just ride will be at VQ/CC or STR campout like you, Justin, OMR, KeepsWhatHappens, Rut, Traci. The reason why some of the newbie rides are so big, at least the ones I've been involved in as because of the partcipation of the seasoned riders to be there to help or just hang out. It's those members like you, OMR, Dino, Jose, 1x1 clyde, Godfather just to name a few, that these newbs want to put a face to since your names are always on here. It's like seeing a movie with all "A" list actors not there or a sporting event with no superstars .

What about something like Peter's Canyon in Orange? I believe you can make a 12 mile overall loop by doing the "normal" route x2. Parking might be tough though.

And of course there's always Fully, where parking is ample and there are lots of obvious places to regroup. Nothing else I can really think of...
