Thumbs up Wheezy's RIP9 Report

So I've got about 50 miles on the new rig so far. I've ridden Aliso, El Moro, and I also do my local morning or after work ride in Shady Canyon every day during the week.

After a 7 year hiatus, it's been very difficult to start riding again. My lungs burn, my legs burn, my arse is sore, and my back feels like it's going to give out; and yet for some reason I LOVE IT.

I'm probably the only 6'5" 240lb guy on a Large frame but it feels perfect to me with the Thompson layback post and 100mm stem. (last "trail" bike was a Foes DH rig)

By the way, the thing GLOWS IN THE DARK. Bonus feature that I didn't even know about until talking to JSims about it. Little black light action and sure enough, the thing lights up a room. (I'll take a pic of that soon)

I am very interested on a RR of that fork. I am not happy with the Reba on my RIP.

Don't blame you, when I rode the Evolve, I felt like I was going to rip off the Reba. It just doesn't match the rear...

I was talking with Chris Sugai @ Niner and he told me that on all of his RIP demo's, he makes sure that they all have the Manitou's..... He highly suggested the fork.

The fork: So far so good. Not as adjustable as I would like coming from the DH world. Rebound control is "good" but lacks range (although the entire range it does offer is completely "useable", compression lacks any range at all, it goes from WAY to soft to too stiff in two clicks. However, at one click, and about 15% more pressure than they recommend the thing is great. I have no major complaints, but then again I don't have anything to honeslty compare it to from the new school stuff.

I can say that it's definitely better than the Reba in terms of stiffness. I rode this exact bike around the parking lot with a Reba and it felt like it was going to snap. (240lbs, dry weight) I would have liked to try the White Bros fork as well but I'm happy with the Manitou. Mr. Sims seems to like the Maverick as well. As far as I'm concerned if the Manitou keeps going up and down and doesn't break I'll be happy with it forever.

I spent about 2 minutes taking snapshots, and a few minutes in photoshop to sharpen and resize.

Always thought it was pretty, but I wasn't into the ride! Didn't get to ride it much, or on home trails.

Looks nice and glad you are enjoying it!

Lenz had the Manitou on the Behemoth I rode. It felt like a decent fork!

MTB Mag mentioned problems with the rear pivot bolts coming lose on more than one occasion and also said the head of the allen bolt is soft and can be easily stripped. Have you run into this problem on your bike?

Todd,
Where you ridin' tomorrow? I might be up for a few laps at Oaks. I'd be up for meeting you there for a lap then heading over to Blackstar to get my climb on. Give me a call after 5:30 if your down.

I read on the 29er forum (emptybeer) that changing the oil to a lower wt helps this fork tremendously in that regard. sorry don't have a link for you, do a search over there for specifics.
