Combo Breaker!
![]() |
So I have been getting chronic flat tires on my 29er since I built it. Every time I got a new flat, I would change the tube in a hurry and could never figure out what the problem was.
I was commenting about it to my LBS mechanic yesterday and he suggested that maybe the rim tape was pulled off/away/askew in a spot or two. I went home to check and what did I find--NO FRIGGIN RIM TAPE at all. It totally slipped my mind when I built the bike. My most recent wheel purchases have been tubeless wheels and it's been a long time since I built a bike with new wheels that weren't tubeless. So, 2 months and $30 in tubes later I put some on today. What sort of Brain Farts/Dumb things have you done--that you're willing to admit to that is? ![]()

Well I failed to check my bike out before a ride. The Crank bolt was loose on the non drive side and fell out. Could not find it. It was a square taper ( if that is right) bottom bracket. So I pounded the crank arm back on crooked to finish the ride.New bracket and crank afterwards.

It involved the lift gate of my truck.
...Holding the bike's handlebar with my right hand. "Closed" the truck's lift gate (or so I thought) with my left hand. Dropped my keys. Bent down to pick-up my keys..... POW! The lift gate cracked me right on top of the head! ![]() Probably had a concussion.... Didn't stop me from riding though!

Huh?
|
I was riding through a park and saw the jump that I usually hit. Well there were these cute girls sitting there and I decided to go out. Well I hit the jump but I didnt get the landing correctly. I landed too far forward and my front tire popped. That caused me to crash and slam my right knee into the shock bolt(there still a dent there). I got up, pretended nothing happened, and limped my way back home. I dont think they were impressed.

McDonalds drive-through.
Went through it twice with the bike on the roof because I always finished my night ride with the seat down so it was low enough. And those first couple times I really looked up to make sure it would clear under a height bar, which it did easily. Third time comes along and I finished the ride with a x-c section (seat way up this time) and didn't bother this time to check the height. Just rolled through and it sounded like the San Andreas was splitting open all around me. But it was just my Thule footings tearing out of my roof-top rails as my bike saddle hooked the height bar. The end result was me looking back, incredulous, at my bike hanging in mid-air, connected to the entire rack, also hanging in mid-air, and me looking like the total dumbass that I was. Guy in the drive through window woke up for the first time ever during his night shift. Funny thing was, my roof rack was totally destroyed--every bit of it from footings, to trays, etc--but the bike itself was 100% fine. All the weight went on the rails under a WTB saddle and it took it all like a champ while entirely destroying an amazing amount of Thule hardware. Really stupid move. I'm an idiot. ![]() |

Well this is not really per say mountain bike related , except I was riding my bike. After a few beers I was riding home and was adjusting my light going around a corner, and ran into the back of a parked car. It really hurt.

BMX National race in Englishtown New Jersey back in 1983 or so and I'm kinda nervous waiting for the main event. I'm in the staging lines a few motos away from my race and for some reason I reach down to nervously spin my cranks backwards. Somehow I get my finger caught in between the front sprocket and chain as its spinning and wedge it in there real good, puncturing my index finger nail with one of the front sprocket teeth. YEEEOOOWWWW! I yell as I pedal the crank foreward to remove my finger. Bleeding and hurting like hell, still placed second in the main a few minutes later....ahh, good times.

I attempted to learn how to manual without have the wheelie in my toolbox of skills. That hurt.
Riding a road bike while wearing Birks. That scar is still there. Riding without gloves because it was too hot for full-fingered gloves. I proceeded to crash no less than 2 miles into the ride. That really hurt, esp because I sliced up my palm pretty good. I also crashed mid tri a few years trying to put my gloves on. My one gloved hand was okay, but I needed gravel cleaned out of both my knee and ungloved hand. One of these days I'd like to attempt a j-hop into a pickup truck bed. I can see that one hurting a lot. |

So many,where to start!
I took my regular ride into the shop for service and left my clipless pedals on the bike.Left the house for a ride on my backup bike later that day and forgot that it had trap pedals on it.About a quarter mile down the road I went to bunny-hop a small puddle, and both feet came off the pedals causing a backspin that gouged into my left shin to where I could see the bone. Later when I got back from the medical clinic and getting 6 stitches,I took the pedals and threw them as far as I could!!! -Lloyd
