100 miles at between 9,000 & 12,000 feet above sea level with climbs like this adding up to 12,000 feet of elevation gain.

Then that doesn't sound so bad!!

Ahhh....powerline.....such a sight.

The real deal is hitting the bottom of powerline right when the afternoon rains start up. That was a real picnic.

I walked. Both years:-)

The photos really don't do that section justice. It's really, really steep. Really steep.

I raced Leadville in '96. It was a great time! I don't know if I will ever do it again? The best memories of that trip were riding parts of the Colorado Trail on the way to Leadville! That lead to us going back in 2006 and riding the entire trail. Well except the wildreness sections of course. Check out our Colorado Trail ride report at http://www.otbmbc.com/epics/2006-CT/index.shtml

If you are going to Leadville check out some of the sections of the CT on your way out! It is awesome!

Exactly how much of the 100miles is powerline/jeep trail and how much is singletrack. Also, are there a specific couple of hills that really take a toll or just a whole lot of smaller hills that add up to 12,000'? Oh, and just because I'm a hill addict, when do I sign up for the 2009 ride?

My guess is around Jan 09.

This is part of the USAC NUE, isn't it?

The race is about 75% dirt roads, 15% pavement and 10% double track.

In terms of the climbs.....they're all long, sustained efforts. There are a few short, steep climbs that take their toll.....but the real damage is done on the long, sustained 1-2 hour climbs.

It's a climbers race, that's for sure.

To sign up you need to get your check and registration form into the lottery by the end of January, 2009.

How do some people maintain traction on such steep grades? Just look at the mile 40 climb; it's nearly vertical! Do you use Spidey glue on your tires? Them mountains yonder are nothing like the ones 'round here. I've never seen such steep blue-green mountains with pointy summits before. I guess I need to get out of the San Gabes and see the rest of the world.

I personally can't imagine someone RIDING up West Horsethief either, but I know someone that does (here at work).

Just takes good climbing skills, I guess.

Leadville isn't part of the NUE this year. Landis is suposed to race the whole NUE series so he probably won't be at Leadville this year.

It's not so bad - the vertical scale is exaggerated by a factor of 100.
