Default Hiker Killed on Saturday from fall, Chantry Flats area...

Missing Hiker's Body Recovered From Mt. Wilson Area

POSTED: 1:39 pm PST February 4, 2008
UPDATED: 2:16 pm PST February 4, 2008

MOUNT WILSON, Calif. --
Authorities withheld the name of the woman, who was 32, pending notification of her relatives, Craig Harvey of the coroner's office said. Members of the sheriff's Emergency Services Detail and the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team found the body about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Moore said. Authorities recovered the body of a female hiker Monday from the Mount Wilson area of the Angeles National Forest, after a rockslide and bad weather halted an earlier effort, authorities said. The woman apparently fell near Chantry Flats on Saturday, Deputy Tony Moore of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said. Her body was recovered Monday morning, said Deputy Ed Hernandez. The woman was hiking with a group of friends when she lost her footing and fell off a cliff at about 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Moore said. Because of bad weather -- and a rockslide on Mount Wilson Road --the recovery of the body was delayed, authorities said. Crews were continuing their efforts to clear the roadway, the California Highway Patrol reported.

"The woman was hiking with a group of friends when she lost her footing and fell off a cliff at about 11:45 a.m."

How was she a missing hiker? Did her friends not see her fall?

Yeah, something doesn't sound right about the story. How does a hiking group become that separated that they can go for x minutes without realizing someone is missing? I will try to withhold assigning too much blame without knowing the full details.

It's amazing how many hikers fall over in this area. And if you've rode it, you know the exposure. Although a shorter type ride, the penalty for failure is severe. I feel for her and her relatives.

I wonder if this will put some pressure on the ANF to open the Toll Road. The story I heard from undisclosed sources is the section of the Toll Road with the landslide is within the City of Pasadena and the ANF wants the city to pay for the road clearing. As we can all tell this has not happened yet. I don't see why the city should pay for the cleaning as the city has no real use for the road. It just happens to pass through the city limits. This is not the official position of the city as I would not be privy to that information, just the comments of an undisclosed source.

Yeah Mike, falling off cliffs is bad for your health... I know!

147 stitches in the face, 2 broken ribs, punctured lung, two sprained wrists, two sprained ankles and a very pissed off wife from a superman off Strawberry Peak trail 4 years ago. We sometimes forget the conseqences of our mistakes when riding.

It's so hard to get older doing sh*t like this....

I am 100% in agreement with Mr. Freak. Most trails in the San Gabriel's are well known for their exposure. In places, CHANTRY takes it to another level. Some spots are narrow, others are slick, yet others the terrain is covered by damp leaves.

With regard to questioning how a group could overlook a missing member of the group- easy to do!!! The trail twists and turns (sometimes 180 degrees). Every ride, I watch the strongest hikers cross us first.... intermediates next... the straggler's follow (one by one) after that.

Sorry to hear the news....

I did a superman on the Upper Winter Creek Trail out of Chantry in 2005. The road was still closed back then, I was alone, and it was late on a Sunday. The place was empty to be sure. I was luck and ended up with only 8 stitches in my shin. I stopped riding by myself as much after that. Full report here.

(Man look at those hairy beast legs. Good thing I became a roadie...now they don't look so bad )

This definitly serves as a reminder at how careful we need to be on these trails. I almost lost two friends in the same kind of a situation up in Rubio canyon hiking the falls, I can't imagine how her friends that saw it must feel.

We've all been up there and know what things look like on a good day. Imagine slipping in 2 feet of snow and just not being able to stop. I think Foesnasty can chime in here, he knows what the conditions were like up there last week.

From what I understand she fell on Sturdivant. I haven't been down that one myself but I understand there is a huge pucker factor. I also heard she came to rest 300 feet from where she fell. Her body was found around 6:30pm on Saturday and they just got her out today. That alone should be an indicator of the conditions.

With that, I am so glad I canceled the Saturday Wilson run.

Please be careful everyone.

Mott

Actually it is L.A. County that is responsible for that section of road.

Not many bikers go down the route that passes by the falls, though I want to try it one day. The trail does have a huge pucker factor as it passes by the falls. I honestly don't think I would ride that section. The penalty for failure is way too huge.

They may be responsible but it is clearly within Pasadena city limits. Remember, I'm a geographer/cartographer for a certain municipality. I'm looking for a good public domain source for the information.

When you're ready and conditions allow, I'll walk it with you.
