Let's keep up the good fight though. We can try and hold them off as long as we can and I seriously believe they won't be able to get it done in the next 20 years.

But it will be done.
I see your train of thought and it's not necessarily pessimism, but realism. But that is no excuse to not fight for what you (we) believe in!

I used to think that the proposed El Toro Airport was a for sure thing, but enough people got pissed off about it that the big money eventually lost. So it IS possible just not probable that we can stop the toll road forever.

Stay positive everyone and keep up the fight!

If any of you have not been down to Trestles go there, it's a beautiful place. If you don't surf, or even if you do, make the trip down there when there isn't a swell and you will find a nearly empty beach that can make you feel like you are in the Cayman Islands. You will also find that the beach and surrounding area of San Mateo Creek is rich in wild life. Make the trip at a minus low tide and enjoy tide pools that are abundant in sea life. At low tide you can venture out into ankle deep water and turn over some rocks and you may even find an octopus or two. Did you know that there are steelhead trout up San Mateo Creek? The southern most place in CA that they have been found. I even saw my first mountain lion going down the Trestles trail.

The thought of a toll road going into this area will destroy a very unique area in Southern California and especially Orange County. Do yourself a favor, if you haven't been down the infamous Trestles trail go down there some time and enjoy a little slice of paradise.

Default Important Rally This Saturday!!!

Taking It to The Streets

Join Surfrider and Sierra Club activists this Saturday (February 2) at 11am for a demonstration to Save Trestles and San Onofre! The last few days and hours before the Coastal Commission hearing are crucial--and we must be highly visible!

We'll be waiving signs, holding surf boards and constructing miniature tents to demonstrate how the toll road will ruin the camping and surfing experience at San Onofre State Beach. And we need you there!

Meet us at Staple's parking lot in San Clemente at 11am on Saturday Feb 2.

93 Via Pico Plaza
San Clemente, CA 92672

Coming from the South:

Take the AVE PICO exit,
Turn LEFT onto E AVENIDA PICO.
Turn LEFT onto VIA PICO PLZ

Coming from the North:

Take the AVE PICO exit
Turn RIGHT onto E AVENIDA PICO.
Turn LEFT onto VIA PICO PLZ

Interestingly enough, I saw an article on the back side of the Sports section in the OCRegister about Trestles. There was no mention of the San Clemente single tracks or mountain bikers protesting against the toll roads. The article also provided a link to ocregister.com/beaches and a number of blog postings are pretty heated. The general public is either not aware, not educated, or simply does not care (the usual attitude of "bad" OC residents). The majority only cares about being able to save 10-15 minutes of their time for $5 bucks. By the way, the person that wrote the article is Laylan Connelly lconnelly@ocregister.com if you want to drop her a line to make her aware of the mountain biking community and the San Clemente single tracks. I already dropped in my .02

Default Details RE Feb 6th CCC Meeting

From Friends of The Foothills.org

We have space in our bus/carpool. If you are coming from Orange County, email Robin of the Sierra Club, robin.everett@sierraclub.org. If you are in San Diego, emails Stefanie at: SSekich@surfrider.org and indicate if you would like to leave from Ocean Beach or Oceanside.

The hearing will start at 9am and will go all day. If you are not driving with our bus/carpool you can show up whenever you want. However, we'd like people there at 9am; and if you want to testify you need to turn in your speaker slip in the morning.

As you may know, it's very challenging to know how long the hearing will take. Public hearings can take a few hours, or can go into the night. It's all speculative. However, even if you can only make it for an hour, that is helpful. The more people we have there the bigger the impression we make on the Commissioners-- and at this point, public pressure is key to stopping thistoll road.

If you are driving yourself, please note there is a $9 parking fee. However, we will be offering a few supporters (people who sign in at our booth) $5 in cash to help offset parking cost. This will be "on a first come, first served basis" (remember, we're a nonprofit after all).

We greatly appreciate your flexibility and willingness to take time off of work to show your support for Trestles and San Onofre State Park.

You can wear whatever you want--there is no dress code. However if you get there in good time you will receive a complimentary shirt (this will be at the booth check-in).

A Commission hearing is very similar to a court hearing. We need to be respectful and quite. We are not allowed clap or make audible noise. The rules are very strict--and we want to treat the Commission with the same respect we show the Ocean. If you decide to testify, you will get 2 minutes. Please check out blog in the next few days for talking points. click here

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Skinny….

When: Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Please arrive by 9am.

Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds--at Wyland Hall. There is a large whale mural on the building 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Del Mar, CA 92014. Just off the I-5 in Del Mar at Via de la Valle exit. Enter through O'Brien Gate

We really need to protect these trails and beaches. I road SCST this afternoon and it would be tragedy to let them build a toll road on this land. Also, I surfed Lowers, Uppers & Cotton's since I was a little kid. It's such a great place to surf! I just can't imagine another major freeway here.

P.S. For those of you who have never ridden SCST, click on the link below and check out these pictures. Join us for a Feb. 23 for an STR ride through San Clemente Singletracks (Bad to the Bone Ride BBQ Ride).

I was just perusing the oc weekly the other day and I saw two interesting things.

The first: an ad for carm's coneys in costa mesa. To think, I figured there were no sausage restaurants around!!!

The second (and more to the point): an ad encouraging readers to speak against the proposed toll road expansion. it was about half a page and had some pictures of the areas in question. a good ad.

I already put my .02 into the surfrider petition.
