Default Got bored with the rain...

...so I started tinkering and look what i ended up with...if only it would dry up so i could go riding instead of staying home and playing bike tech. Doing that gets a little costly...

Gotta still get the cranks set up and some other goods...

Hopefully i can get it done tonight or tomorrow and take it out to play thursday...

No offense, but as a recent east coast transplant, I have to say this is telling that Southern Californians are so spoiled with endless sunshine that somehow the idea of riding on a rare rainy weekend isn't an option. I rode one of my favorite local trails in the rain last weekend and it was so much more fun with mud, puddles, new stream carvings, etc.

It's not that we don't dig on the rain, it's just that some of the trails get so little of it that, there's so much traffic on some of them, and the soils erode so easily that they'll get waaaaay torn up if we ride them after there's more than a smattering of rain. Trust me, i can't stand the way alot of southern california people are about it either, but i think you'll find most of us on here stay off a handful of the singletracks after rains to preserve the trails, not 'cause we don't want to be out riding! And there are plenty of places that are just fine to ride around here after and even during the rain - most of the Nat'l Forest trails, fully, etc...(there's plenty of other posts on this...)

Besides, it was just a joke...i just wanted to show off my new toy!

I don't think it's so much being spoiled by sunshine as it is a few other factors.

1) Many of our trails are very vulnerable during and right after it rains. It bothers me to see this type of damage when it has such negative long term effects and so much of it could have been avoided by waiting until those trails dried out.

Many of our trails are generally not the rocky, rooty type that deal with water well. Many of them turn to slimey messes and if you combine that with high traffic, it gets ugly fast

2) If it rained here more regularly, our bikes would likely be more orientated for this type of riding. We'd use tires that shed mud, maybe fenders too. We'd see fit to invest in clothing and other gear if we had those conditions more often. We don't run snow tires on our cars in winter for the same reason. It just doesn't make sense to invest in them for the few times we may need them.

Probably not many people in Ohio have surfboards, scuba gear in Utah, Bently's in Texas, snow skis in Florida or condoms in a convent...... you get the picture.

3) (and most importantly) As soon as you cross into California, your 'watertight qualities' magically disappear. Heck, I think rain will even melt us if we're exposed to enough of it

Around here there are places that you could not ride in the mud even if you wanted to. I got caught in a rain summer storm in Whitting once; that mud caked on my tires so fast and bad that I had to carry my bike out. Here in Laguna I hate this mud, it does not hose off you have to scrub it off.

Even San Gabs, riding in the rain or slushy snow, hearing the decomposed granite grinding away at my drivetrain does not make me happy.

JeffJ, JasonMason, and Dstepper....all good points.

Some trails are better than others. You're right, some would get destroyed by bike traffic after heavy rain. And I've been on some where the mud/clay is like concrete and becomes un-ridable.

I guess just last weekend I found a trail that had no mud, and was SO much fun with all the water on it. And riding it had little impact.

What happened to the Demo 8 you "bought" in Mammoth? That Turner is going to be useless up there!
