I can't believe JamR hasn't beat me to it on this one .....
so I am at the Regional Trail Advisory Meeting last night at Santiago Oaks....and what gets brought up.... "that there have been several mnt bike riders riding in Santiago Oaks at night !!!" That is just Great...here we are working our tails off to get the trails re-opened for all of us and there are a bunch of people that just can't stand to follow the rules.....they might just ruin it for all of us !!! So please...if you know of anyone...or you are the one riding there at night....please DO NOT...you may like the thrill of riding when it's illegal...but please have some respect for those of us that chose to ride legal and are fighting for your rights to even ride these trails at this point!!! |

Like we used to say in the Navy, it takes thousands to put an aircraft carrier out to sea and 1 idiot to sink it. Please don't be the one to sink it for us all.

I'm not one of the night riders, but I am curious...what trails or areas are available to us in SoCal for night rides??? Is there anything at all, or has Big Brother deemed we are not allowed to ride our bikes at night at all?!

Regional parks are off limits after dark....
The National Forest (what is not burned up/closed) is open at night to ride....blackstar, Holy Jim, Trabuco Fully loop, cowan heights horse trail system, OPA horse trail system are a few we ride at night that are legal. |

My first ride at Oaks many years ago was at night. The guy who I went with said that Oaks was legal to ride at night, except an area near the park (I didn't know what that meant at the time). I had no other way to know.
Because Oaks feels simply like open land, it could be hard for many people to identify it as a county or state park with limitations relating to riding at night. And although it's been a while since I've ridden there, I don't remember any signage identifying it as a park with restrictions, which tells me that this is more of a park management problem than a mountain bike rider caused issue. Keep in mind that many hardcore bike riders don't read about bike riding on the internet, so they may not know these restrictions exist.

Honestly, this whole thing is played out. I used to care what others were doing, but now I am just over it. Santiago Oaks isn't that great for riding anyways....Especially with all those crazy hikers, horse people, etc. So many better places to ride. So, if people want to wreck it, go ahead. Enjoy yourself.
Disclaimer: I myself do not ride on trails that are illegal during the day or night. |

Don't throw in the towel on a great place to ride....this same thing can happen and has at our other great places we all love...we need to do what we can to keep our trails open for everyones enjoyment.

Where's the singletrack?

Also our local bike shops like The Path & Switchback always recommends the Oaks… So definitely do what we can to save our “local” trails. I’d hate to drive hours away just to get a good ride ![]() |

That is a HORRIBLE attitude. You let them close ONE trail, it's that much easier to close another, and another, and so on until we are all crammed into "the best riding" area. THEN GUESS WHAT, that "best riding area" turns to crap as well.
Pull your head out. If your not part of the solution you are the problem. Quote:

No reason to get harsh about other people's opinions. There's logic on both sides of the coin.
My thoughts? Learn to find enjoyment in the ride itself, not so much the locale or the destination.

Sean, it's not a matter of opinion. Some guys hate the Santa Ana's and don't care if it closes and with Whiting closed due to fires and if they close the Oaks, just think how MUCH MORE CROWDED Aliso, San Juan, El Morro or San Clemente singletracks would be.
I think that's the point here. |

Precisely, normally I wouldn't jump somebody's "opinion" - but this "I don't ride there so I don't care" attitude is total BS.

Understand... sorry. It's one of those "touchy" subjects. I've seen enough of it in the dirtbike world and it is crowded as ever out there now and it's only getting worse. The more trails that stay open the better. The reason I stopped riding the first time around was the closure of Snow Summit. Lets do our part to fight for land use for bicycles. It's one thing to close land because of "fires" it's another to close land to just OUR group for reasons such as "irresponsibility". Like I said before, you let them close one trail on this basis, it's not long before others start to close as well.
