Default Attn Rubber Gurus! Find me a tire!?

Hey Guys,

I know this is discussed over and over but I need some advice on a rear tire. The tire is to go on a singlespeed that doesn't have very wide chainstays. Must be Non-UST. I tried a 2.24 Mutano and got some frame rub when standing and hammering on the climbs. I mean, usually I just get whatever I can on sale but after awhile I end up with lots of tires that work but just not estatic about.

What I need: A tire that is around 2.1 width, and rolls good but is still good in the loose Socal stuff when braking.

I have tired a Panaracer Fire 2.1 but after time the knobs tear off and I felt the tire broke loose (unpredictable) when braking.

I've looked at a Larsen TT, it looks real fast but I've heard that doesn't bite well when braking.

Other possible tires:

Kenda Nevegal 2.1 (too heavy?)
WTB Exiwolf 2.1
Hutchinson Spider Light 1.85

Anything else you can recommend?

Thanks a lot.

A 2.1 Nevegal stick-e is around 680ish grams, if you can live with the rolling resistance of the stick-e rubber it is one of the best tires out there. I hear the 2.1 is pretty big though so you may still have clearance issues with it. I think they make a 1.95 Nevegal also. A Weirwolf is pretty good in the rear also, just don't turn the tire around the opposite direction or braking under loose sketchy stuff is pretty poor. Maxxis Mobster is also a great tire, although a bit on the heavy side. A 2.35 Maxxis tire is more like a 2.1.or 2.2. I'd maybe go with a DTC Nevegal, less rolling resistance and better wear.....although you will sacrifice some grip compared to the full stick-e version.

I just picked up the 1.95 Kenda Nevegal for my NRS and it hooks up very well. Before I was running 2.0 spiders but they wore fast (33 tpi). Ive only ridden the Kendas once on a trail and they seem to be fine. They do slip on some ocassion but Ive got traction most of the way up.

Hmmm... thanks for the suggestions so far. Sounds like one of the Kenda Neveagal versions is a good candidate. I wonder how much of a difference in grip the DTC 1.95's are compared to the 2.1 stick-E's.

A buddy of mine suggested the Maxxis ADvantage 2.00 too. Anyone know anything about these. Designed by Allison Dunlap.

Default Nevegal ... Nevegal ...

Nevegal 26x2.10 STICK-E = 680 g
Nevegal 26x2.10 DTC = 630 g

You already know this but I ride the Nevegal "Stick-e" 26x2.1's on my Kikapu (rear tire)... I personally think the stick-e slows me down a bit. Plus the fact that the tire weighs in at 680g doesen't help.

I would give the Nevegal DTC's a try... shaves off a little weight. I imagine they don't hook up as well as the sticke's do though.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I might look into a Nevegal DTC 2.1 or 1.95 this weekend.

I bought a 2.1 Exiwolf WTB this week and tried it out. I think that's a pretty great tire. Though, it looks like it may wear fast b/c small short knobs.

I have been running this same tire as a front for almost a year. Still has plenty of knob life left in it. Works great in every condition so far....excect loose gravel......but then again, what tire does work in gravel.

If only they would make it in a 2.3
