Ride to ride again

Default Broken Bike....

Well, some of you may have heard by now….I broke my lil baby the other night (Thursday) when we were riding the Chiquita Ridge. Yep….although fixable, she was certainly broke.

We were riding along when all of a sudden I got out of the saddle to power up a hill an this darn twig…no, stick…..no, tree branch decided to jump into my derailleur. OOP’s !!

When we started looking at it, it was to say the least – unanimously declared - a train wreck. My derailleur was shoved so far into my spokes the only logical way that it was possible was if the rear wheel drop out was bent that far too – LOL – it was!! Ok, so it’s not all the funny!!

Miraculously Ken and Ned got the frame un-bent enough - pulled the derailleur out of my spokes – woohoo - and all seemed to be working fine. Well, working fine enough to allow me to THINK all was well and to continue pressing on further and further from….civilization!!! After trekking on for, oh, I’d say another half hour - I again got out of the saddle to power up a hill, and my bike stopped so suddenly, I about when over the handle bars. I thought….what the HECK!!! You will never believe it, but my rear wheel came out of the drop out….….yep, and I thanked God right then and there I was going UP when it happened, not DOWN or I would still be DOWN!

OK, so we got her fixed up AGAIN…and I trekked on further…..I’m telling you - I’m not a quitter!!!!! About another 20 minutes went by…and the rear brake started rubbing so bad the wheel would barely move - not that I need one, but talk about a handicap – geez!!!! SO…..everybody stopped and we looked at her AGAIN…and now discovered one of the spokes was broke, and the rear wheel was out of tru. POOP!!

Anyway - I could go on and on with this – there were a few more episodes - but to make a really LONG story short – FYI, I did finish the ride….albeit on the road and with no rear brake….I did finish!!!

The bad news, I have retired my 10 year old....beautiful yellow Specialized who usually sports a Pig horn……she will now be my back up bike as I have had her fixed - BUT.......the good news – I have purchased an incredibly beautiful Trek Fuel EX8!!! I got her from Switchback Cyclery.....Tim and Sherry are the best!!!

I don't want to get her dirty.....Pray for the rain to go away, the mud to dry out and the sun to shine so I can get her in the dirt!!!

That sucks. Im having problems with my derailleur too. I think I hit it one something during a ride, its kinda bent and the shift cable is partially severed. Still works for the most part. I got a free tune up on my bike since i bought it new so im going to try to get them to fix it.

Nice new Trek's all over the place now. Dare I say, Treks are cool?!?!?! They better be, I got one too. The Fuels are one of the better XC bikes I've ridden in while. The asymetrical chainstays are super rigid.

Nice new ride - congrats!

You are a trooper for sure to keep pushing through that. After the second one I would have taken the hint from the trail gods.

Gratus on the upgrade. I myself was close to the Trek when I found my Stumpy. Very nice bike you got there.

Nice bike. Last year we made Dirty Boo's specialized fsr her back-up and picked up a Trek Fuel EX wsd as well. It's quite a pimp ride, she likes hers. I think you will really like it as well, good choice!

Nice, after 10 years you deserve a new bike...me I am lucky if I can go 10 months without buying or tweaking my bikes. I have no idea how one gets by with just one bike.

Maybe I too could have the "fortune" of a twig, no a stick, no a tree limb to jam into my derailer. THough it would probably end up with me bikeless, not coming home with such a sick bike...On second thought, may God smile on my Rockhopper and keep twigs, I mean tree trunks out of my way and me out of their way.

Sweet ride girl. Now that you have new rig you can always upgrade to the VQ if you wish. I'm sure Sherry can accomodate that. Congrats V. Hopefully we can ride soon.
