Nice new rig - i guess it's easier to justify a new one if the old one's busted!

You're gonna have to find something bigger to train for now though...the coup'll just be too easy with a new bike and all...

We were riding along when all of a sudden I got out of the saddle to power up a hill an this darn twig…no, stick…..no, tree branch decided to jump into my derailleur. OOP’s !!

When we started looking at it, it was to say the least – unanimously declared - a train wreck. My derailleur was shoved so far into my spokes the only logical way that it was possible was if the rear wheel drop out was bent that far too – LOL – it was!! Ok, so it’s not all the funny!!

Miraculously Ken and Ned got the frame un-bent enough - pulled the derailleur out of my spokes – woohoo - and all seemed to be working fine. Well, working fine enough to allow me to THINK all was well and to continue pressing on further and further from….civilization!!! After trekking on for, oh, I’d say another half hour - I again got out of the saddle to power up a hill, and my bike stopped so suddenly, I about when over the handle bars. I thought….what the HECK!!! You will never believe it, but my rear wheel came out of the drop out….….yep, and I thanked God right then and there I was going UP when it happened, not DOWN or I would still be DOWN!

OK, so we got her fixed up AGAIN…and I trekked on further…..I’m telling you - I’m not a quitter!!!!! About another 20 minutes went by…and the rear brake started rubbing so bad the wheel would barely move - not that I need one, but talk about a handicap – geez!!!! SO…..everybody stopped and we looked at her AGAIN…and now discovered one of the spokes was broke, and the rear wheel was out of tru. POOP!!

Anyway - I could go on and on with this – there were a few more episodes - but to make a really LONG story short – FYI, I did finish the ride….albeit on the road and with no rear brake….I did finish!!!

The bad news, I have retired my 10 year old....beautiful yellow Specialized who usually sports a Pig horn……she will now be my back up bike as I have had her fixed - BUT.......the good news – I have purchased an incredibly beautiful Trek Fuel EX8!!! I got her from Switchback Cyclery.....Tim and Sherry are the best!!!

I don't want to get her dirty.....Pray for the rain to go away, the mud to dry out and the sun to shine so I can get her in the dirt!!!
Nice, I remember you mentioned wanting a new bike, or new car- you have your priorities straight!

I watched that same thing happen to a friend going up San Juan. Ran over a stick with the back tire, -stick jumped between the chain and derailler, - snapped derailler in two. He got off easy with just a new derailler however.

Thanks Gene...yeah, I can't WAIT to get rolling on her. I was praying for rain so I could rest my legs a day or two due to all the training rides we've been doing....Now I'm praying it stops!! AND drys up quick!!

AND the sun comes out creating a a nice balmy 78 degrees day..AND...while I'm at it...I'll add in a slight breeze !!

UPGRADE to the VQ???? I didn't see a motor on her.....

Hope to see you soon!!

It might be mounted there because of bottle clearance issues with the top tube. Either way Vickie, you can get a side releasing bottle holder cage so you can move the cage to the downtube. As OMR says, on the down tube the bottle usually gets caked with dirt.

Or this below.

If you hadn't prefaced this story with the whole Bataan Death March RR, I might have thought this was some serious rationalizing. Like, "This one time, three years ago, my bike ghost-shifted. So I bought a new bike!"

Congrats on the new ride - those new Treks do look sweet. Way to earn it!
