Default Short suggestions (actual shorts, not a brief request)

I had a pair of Fox Mid-Rangers and the pad started deteriorating after a month or so, so I took em back.

I liked that the Fox was a bit tight around the legs so they wouldn't catch on the seat, but left just enough room to get them over my legs (I have larger than average legs with a 32" waist)

But now I dont have a good pair of short to wear. I wanted to look at Oakly's as they tend to just make the best stuff I have found.

Anyone have any suggestions for shorts as well as where to buy them for good prices?

Thanks

Hoss is popular and they are made in Anaheim. Their shorts run around $45 or so MSRP, so they are pretty good deal if you find some that fit you. JensonUSA, the Path, and other places carry them.

I really like Fox stuff even though they are a bit more expensive. Pearl Izumi makes some good stuff too.

PI has decent baggies. The Oakley's will catch on your saddle. I like the Fox Seargent's, but they aren't cheap.

I ride Oakley's. I'm 5'10" with a 36 in waist, so the only shorts in my size were a little long. However, they don't get caught on my saddle. I bought them about a year ago for around $80 (I was advised to invest in butt padding). A little expensive, but the pad liner only attaches with three buttons, so they can easily be separated from the short and worn under another pair.

Default Vote for Hoss

I just bought 3 pairs to replace my shredded Fox collection. Very good value, wash well. The material is nice & the pockets are laid out very well. My Fox shorts have done me well & lasted at least 2 years of non stop riding, so it will be interesting to see how well the Hoss stand up, they also have Knickers too!
* Note * I found them to run very small sizes I normally wear 33 34 (Fox Large) & their large is just a little too snug. so I run a baggy XL

I've got three pair of the Fox High Frequency shorts. Combined mileage on all three is somewhere around 6000+ miles. No problems with the pads.

Fox is nice stuff, but I really love my Pearl Izumi's, even though I need to get them altered as they're a bit too big. The pair I have has just the right amount of stretch to be comfortable yet durable, and I love their liners & padding.

I've tried on some Hoss & Oakleys: Liked the overall designs but couldn't find the right fit.

BTW: If you're looking for a good deal, check the Goodwill. I hear a certain STR member has been known to donate brand-new riding shorts! (though not quite intentionally )

Can't complain about the 3 pairs of Fox shorts I have, still fairly new, but I really like the fit and feel.. Also had a pair of Pearl Izumi's that I liked and lasted for several years. I also had some Nema's, but never used them enough to really make a good evaluation, the liner/pad never seemed to fit right though. Thats just about $0.02 worth.. Erik

i'll add a vote for nemas. i've got two pair of the crown jewels and really like them. the only bummer is the zipper pockets, kinda hard to get in and out of during riding, need to stop to gather your items. but i'd buy another pair. will probably try the "searcher" next.

also own a pair of oakley ballistics, too long, don't dig the removable liner. won't buy another pair.

Another vote for the hoss brand shorts. Around 40.00 at most places, good value for the price.

I usually just wear some board shorts, with speedo's underneath stuffed with a sock.

I used to love the older NEMA Crown Jewels, but the past several years of them have been a dissapointment to me. So, lately, I like some of the stuff from Oakley. No saddle snag problems here.

Go treat yourself and buy some sugoi's or some pearl izumi's(both the "roadie" style without baggie short) and wear them with whatever shell you want. Your a$$ will thank you, especially on long rides.

Yeah, I have 3 pairs of shorts and the Fox are by far the best. Lets face it when you don't want to rub your "gear" you need an ergonomic pad. I say pay the extra cash. I hate to think about butt comfort when I'm trying to concentrate on the trail ahead.

For the money you can't beat Hoss Ponderosa Shorts. Support a local small business too - that gives back to the local biking scene and trail work/events.

Love the fit and all the pockets on these shorts.
