Default Broken Frame

Last night on the loop I managed to break my rear chainstay right at the weld. I was coming down the hill to Castlewood Dr & N. Gilbert and on the last bump I heard my rear tire rubbing. I thought I had bottomed out my rear shock, but it didn't seem right on such a small bump.

I continued riding and tried to climb Kuttner Trail and that when it all went to crap. I tried to shift and I could hear metal hitting metal. It could have been worse if my rear wheel had come off or whatever. Thank God it was only a ruined ride and not a crash.

Thanks to those who stopped and helped, OneLegRolledUp, Duke, Pugz, and others. Thanks to CC and Dino for coming to pick me up so I didn't have to walk back a long way.

I've already sent an email off to Ibex for a warranty replacement or a full refund. I don't expect a refund, but it never hurts to ask. I've been looking for a new 29er...

For your viewing pleasure:

For Dino, he liked this pic for some reason

Dude, that blows. Good luck with getting a replacement. I've heard great things about their CS.

Wow! Someone else out there named Duke? I no longer feel special.

Sam, that was a sneaky way to get to Roscoe's early. Glad you didn't biff it at the bottom of the hill.

Wow, that seriously sucks. At least it didn't lead to a crash...that is definitely what I would call "catastrophic failure."

How old is the bike? Cannot imagine how a current warranty would not cover that.

Good luck with that Sam. It will be interesting to hear how it turns out for you. If you want to borrow a singlespeed for a bit let me know. Mine should fit you.

Sam, Dino told me to not to say anything, but he was mentioning on the way over to Roscoe's...that if you would have bought the DW-Link, you know the one with self righting capabilities, world class - world chapion Iron Horse that would have never happened.

It really surprised me...he's usually such a quiet guy and keeps such things to himself.

Must be something he feels pretty strongly about..

Good luck with your replacement process!

More than likely, depending on how old the bike is and their warranty period, you'd just get a new rear triangle or a new chainstay.

Most companies have a 1-2 year warranty. My Enduro has a lifetime, so we will probably never get rid of it (back when it was Justin's the non-drive side chainstay broke near the weld (he noticed it in cleaning, so never had any problems) and Specialized had a new one to us in about 2 days.

Specialized now I think has a 5 year, and 1 or 2 for DH bikes.

If you are the original owner and it's only a year or so old they should replace at least the rear triangle.

Otherwise, they may offer you crash replacement (that's usually what they call it) where you'd get money off a new frame.

Good luck, and glad to hear that there wasn't a crash!

They have a 5 year warranty and I just got this bike in June 2007, so it should be no problem. I don't really have confidence in the entire frame after this, so I hope they don't just offer a rear triangle.

SSinGA, I agree that Jack from IBEX can be a real ass on MTBR in defending his brand. The limited experience I've had with IBEX CS has been good; they sent me a new seat post QR when the stock one was not to my liking, no questions asked. Obviously this is a bigger issue than a QR.

Thanks for the SS offer Andy. I don't know if my legs can handle a SS, though I suppose beggars can't be choosers. Does anyone have a geared bike to loan me for a while? Ideally a geared HT 29er, but I will take what I can get given the situation. A six pack of excellent beer (or beer of your choice if you prefer) would await the lender.

BTW, Dino was already trying to sell me a new bike on the ride back to the courthouse. First he was talking about a Kona that Tani had at the Path for cheap. He kept quiet on Iron Horses though. I guess it was because Dino couldn't arrange to get his IH to the loop so he didn't ride. As Duke pointed out, I guess Iron Horses don't have a self-delivering feature!

That sucks man but hey look at the positives it will give you a excuse with the misses to go and get your dream bike That bike has some great componets I am just not too sure about the frame. Maybe just get yourself another frame and transfer all the parts?

No, she was asleep when I got home. I told her that I'd broke my frame and she just rolled over and groaned.

If all that broke was the chain stay, they shouldn't need to replace the entire frame. It was pretty close to the heat affected zone of the weld. That's where breaks often occur.
