Default tips for riding in the summer

So lets share tips on riding during summer.

My tip: watch out for the mosquitos (west nile virus). More info . . .

Take plenty of water . ride early or later in the afternoon.

I agree with Serge, stay hydrated, ride early or late in the day, and if you ride in the heat, definately make sure you are riding with a buddy. It would be wise to always carry identification and other pertinent information in case of an emergency.

I like to start at 7:00 in summer and climb to higher elevations. Finish climbing by 10:00 on hottest days. Ice water is great: it cools your insides and keeps your back a little cooler, too. I've also frozen gatorade bottles. One more tip: pre-hydrate. I always drink a 20 oz gatorade on the way to a long ride. The problem is if you wait to drink until you are thirsty, you are probably already somewhat dehydrated. (Same applies to eating. Eat a good breakfast and force yourself to eat periodically on long rides before you feel hungry).
