Some rainy day reading for all of you. The SS bike is finally complete! I'm sad because I don't have anything else to build but happy that I can finally ride it!
Below is the parts list, the cost of the part, and where I sourced it from. I wanted to keep the budget under $300. Parts swapped from the old Giant Warp DS2: -Two 26x2.1 Forte tires -Forte contour saddle -Giant riser handle bar -Giant stem -Shimano Deore cranks (32t middle ring retained) -VP components campus pedals -Shimano BB-ES70 Parts donated by FooFighter (Thanks!) ![]() -Specialized seat post -Shimano XTR brake levers Parts purchased from 1FGRider (Thanks for the great price!) ![]() -Two Mavic 225 wheels with threaded Cannondale hubs and skewers -Hayes HMX-1 mechanical brakes -Older Surly chain tensioner - '01 Marz Z.1 MCR Bomber fork rebuilt by the Bike Co.110-140mm no lock out Cost $103 Parts purchased from Adrenaline (Thanks for the STR discount!) ![]() -Marin B17 frame -Shorter chain ring bolts -Lizard skin chain protector -SRAM PC-1 Chain (broke The Path one) ![]() -Surly chain tensioner (old one didn't have much tension left) -ACS 19t threaded cog -Ritchey headset Cost $180 Parts purchased from Performance Bike -Cane Creek brake cables -Two tubes -Oury non-lock on grips Cost: $22 Parts purchased from The Path (Thanks for the STR Discount!) ![]() -ACS 22t thread cog -SRAM PC-1 Chain Cost: $32 Recouped $40 for selling the Giant frame. fork, wheels, and extra parts to Jay. Thanks! Total cost for the project: $297! Edit: I plan to upgrade to either clips or better platform pedals and a new saddle. Also, I did a ghetto weigh in of my bike (me holding it) and it tips in at roughly 27lbs. A big thanks to the huge number of folks that supported this project and offered advice and friendly stabs at the rear mounted dinner plate (I expect to see you at the SS meet for more crap talking!!) . A big thanks to everyone on the SS thread, The Path, and Adrenaline for going the extra mile! I have certainly learned a ton from various SS sites including Sheldon Brown's. I really enjoy building more but I don't feel I will regret this project since my ultimate goal was to get stronger. Dino, brother, don't worry. This bike won't replace the beloved Iron Horse! |

Looks great. But get some clipless pedals. It'll let you use your hamstrings more on the real steep climbs, and you can spin faster on the flats.

But for about ten years I have been driving bright red trucks. In September I got past my obsession with red...which was in all honesty very difficult to do, and bought a White truck. ![]() Thats why White is the new Red, as you can see, I'm still trying to convince myself that its O.K. I love RED. |

Coleko, Hawaii time is in full blown effect in my family. Typically 2 hours late to parties.
It's all good. It's easier to really enjoy things in life. Foo, my bad on the brake levers. Rode it around the street and that is about it. I'll remind myself not to eat anything but if TrailRider (Mike) comes along I will eat Mexican food before his arrival. ![]() Pho, yeah, gotta get the shoes and clips but will have to wait for a bit before any upgrades. |

Cool new SS. It's also cool to see some Hawaiians here. I split my time growing up between here and The North Shore of Oahu ( I went to Sunset Beach Elementary). Then later we moved to Maui. I still go home at least once a year, to see my Dad and sister and my other family. It's hard to come back here after a week at my Dads. It's snowing at my house right now!

Dino, brother, don't worry. This bike won't replace the beloved Iron Horse! Be carefull..........I let a $4,000 bike sit in my garage for 6 months after building my first budget SS. Mix it up and keep it fresh ![]() |

I'd rather be climbing...

Congrats! 'Tis a beautiful machine. Now just replace that cush fork with something rigid & you'll be all set!
![]() However, I'm a firm believer that clips are an absolute must with a SS. It's tough enough even having the ability to power through the entire stroke. I can't imagine only getting good *oomph* on the downstroke.
